Seve Ballesteros statue vanishes from hometown in Spain | Golf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Spanish authorities have launched an investigation following the disappearance of a statue commemorating golfer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/seve-ballesteros\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seve Ballesteros<\/a> from his hometown of Pedrena, near Santander in northern Spain\u2019s Cantabria region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Marina de Cudeyo Town Council confirmed the incident on Sunday through their social media accounts, describing the disappearance as \u201can unfortunate event\u201d and suggesting foul play. \u201cEverything indicates that it was a theft,\u201d the council stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The statue, which has been a focal point in tiny Pedrena as a tribute to Ballesteros\u2019 enduring legacy, vanished sometime over the weekend, local police told Reuters, indicating that they are now working to identify those responsible and recover the tribute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf anyone has observed any suspicious activity, especially in the last 24 hours, please report it to the police,\u201d the town council urged in a post on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The life-size statue of the late golfer was located in La Barquer\u00eda Park and was created in 2009 by sculptor Salvador Garc\u00eda Ceballos.
