{"id":421936,"date":"2026-01-20T18:30:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T18:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/421936\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T18:30:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T18:30:35","slug":"calgary-lifts-water-restrictions-officials-say-bearspaw-pipe-fixed-and-stable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/421936\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary lifts water restrictions, officials say Bearspaw pipe fixed and stable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Calgary\u2019s 1.6 million residents and those in surrounding municipalities are once again free to flush and take longer showers, as water restrictions imposed due to a broken water main were lifted Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m damn excited,\u201d Mayor Jeromy Farkas told reporters at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe Bearspaw Feeder Main ruptured on Dec. 30, sending a torrent of water onto city streets, trapping more than a dozen motorists who needed to be rescued from their cars and prompting the city to plead with Calgarians to conserve water.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>He said while it\u2019s a relief the Bearspaw South Feeder Main has returned to service, the real hard work is just beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The pipe \u2014 which has now broken twice in less than two years \u2014 has been deemed terminally defective and needs replacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now in a race against the clock,\u201d Farkas said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a matter of if, but when (the line) fails again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the repair work will be fast tracked and urged Calgarians to rally behind the project as Americans did with the Apollo rocket program in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has to become our moon shot,\u201d Farkas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the next 365 days, this has to be our civic mission. We built the Saddledome (arena) in about two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we have to do this in one year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe section of the Bearspaw Feeder Main that ruptured is seen being hauled away by truck as city crews scrambled to make emergency repairs by installing a new section of steel pipe.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Bearspaw main broke late last month, spilling a torrent of frigid water onto a city commuter road and stranding some evening drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The pipe handles 60 per cent of the city\u2019s treated water.<\/p>\n<p>For more than two weeks, Calgarians and those in surrounding municipalities were urged to reduce shower times, toilet flushes, laundry and dish loads.<\/p>\n<p>The city also cut back on water use at swimming pools and ice rinks.<\/p>\n<p>The pipe closure put the city in a bind, as it was forced to rely on water reserves in its Glenmore Reservoir. Those reserves can\u2019t be refilled until the spring runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Residents cut back on some water but, for the most part, used more than could be replaced, potentially putting the city at risk if there was an emergency, such as a massive fire.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the city\u2019s infrastructure services general manager, Michael Thompson, warned the system could safely accommodate just two more pipe breakages ahead of the spring thaw.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2024, the same water main broke and Calgarians were forced to cut back on their water.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tPhotos posted to social media by the city of Calgary on Jan. 8, show the replacement section of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main after it was installed by city crews.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tX\/cityofcalgary\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, city council received an independent panel report on that break. It broadly blamed the failure on two decades of underinvestment, lack of communication and co-ordination, as well as insufficient knowledge of the risk of pipe failures.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The pipe has also moved into the political arena, with Premier Danielle Smith recently targeting former mayor Calgary Naheed Nenshi. Nenshi was mayor during part of the time when, the report says, projects to inspect and perform maintenance on the line were deferred for other priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Nenshi, head of the Opposition NDP, is currently Smith\u2019s main provincial political.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seeds of the problem today, make no mistake, began under previous administrations,\u201d Smith told reporters earlier this month.
