A world-record 160-metre-long shawarma attempt, a three-acre bicentennial-themed corn maze and a “Happy 200th Birthday, Ottawa” drag show are among projects receiving funding from Ottawa Tourism to boost visitor experience in the capital in 2026. <\/p>\n

The city is planning major celebrations to commemorate 200 years of history since construction began on the Rideau Canal, overseen by Lt.-Col. John By, from whom Bytown got its name. <\/p>\n

Ottawa Tourism is supporting 14 projects celebrating Indigenous history, Franco-Ontarian culture, art and music with a connection to the capital, and other entertainment events.<\/p>\n

“The diversity of the projects supported by the 200th Tourism Animation Fund showcases the creativity of Ottawa\u2019s tourism community and will help make this anniversary a truly memorable experience for residents and visitors alike,” Ottawa Tourism CEO Michael Crockatt said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n

Each selected project will receive a grant of up to $20,000 to support up to half its expenses, with a view to enhancing tourism and celebrating Ottawa’s history during the bicentennial.<\/p>\n
