{"id":422512,"date":"2026-01-21T00:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T00:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/422512\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T00:44:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T00:44:08","slug":"carney-cautious-about-trumps-board-of-peace-invitation-as-champagne-rules-out-1-billion-payment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/422512\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney cautious about Trump\u2019s \u2018Board of Peace\u2019 invitation as Champagne rules out $1-billion payment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/7W2EVEWW6BFPXPE2DSEQ2ZJW34.jpg?auth=1d84e19739bed8d0d478fac9e0436d3cf251b641946026e8008d95247a9798a4&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday.FABRICE COFFRINI\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> is sounding a cautious note on his invitation to take part in U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d \u2013 even as other leaders balk at the hefty price tag and the list of countries Trump has invited to participate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Carney said there are still many unanswered questions about the structure of the board, which is meant to oversee the next phase of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/gaza\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/gaza\/\">Gaza<\/a> peace plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe think there (are) aspects of the governance and the decision-making process that could be improved,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-eu-trump-greenland-tariff-threat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carney stands behind Greenland, criticizes Trump without naming him in blunt Davos speech<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cBut we will work with others, obviously work with the United States, because we will do anything that we can to improve the situation, horrific situation there, and move on to a path to a &#8230; true two-state solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Trump\u2019s 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan included the creation of a \u201cBoard of Peace.\u201d That plan was endorsed by the UN Security Council in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Carney said on Sunday that he had agreed in principle to accept a Trump invitation to sit on the board<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The board quickly became controversial when it was confirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin had also been invited to take part, despite Russia\u2019s ongoing war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It\u2019s not clear how many leaders have been asked to join the board. Among those who have confirmed receiving invitations are the leaders of Israel, Belarus, Slovenia and Thailand, and members of the European Union\u2019s executive.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/J5SAJBD42ZCCJF3VREC37TD5TQ.JPG?auth=dd25a33f6ee08e714db448113682dc3cac9aeee7c1c00dbdc838de1b419b8574&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A Palestinian girl walks past the rubble of houses destroyed in Israeli strikes during the war, in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip on Saturday.HASEEB ALWAZEER\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Argentine President Javier Milei and Paraguay\u2019s President Santiago Pe\u00f1a posted their invitations on their social media accounts over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The widening list of countries invited to participate has led some global leaders to warn that the board\u2019s mandate extends beyond the crisis in Gaza. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Trump has long been critical of multinational institutions and significantly cut U.S. funding to the United Nations. When asked Tuesday if he intends for the new peace board to replace the United Nations, the president said, \u201cIt might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">World leaders have also questioned the board\u2019s permanent membership fee of $1 billion.
