PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. \u2013 Justin Rose hit the shot of the year \u2013 and, perhaps, the best-ever shot in TGL history \u2013 as Los Angeles Golf Club rolled over Jupiter Links GC Tuesday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rose made his first-ever albatross (yes, even in real life) and the first-ever albatross in the TGL to push LAGC over Jupiter Links 8-4 for their first win of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rose knocked a 4-iron in from 227 yards away for a deuce on the par-5 10th, setting off a rambunctious celebration amongst his teammates, Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Even Tiger Woods \u2013 who was sidelined due to injury again but was mic\u2019d up and participating in Jupiter Links\u2019 matchup \u2013 couldn\u2019t help but smile and gave Rose a hug after it was revealed that it was Rose\u2019s first ever albatross.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know it was going in, but as a player I knew that I executed and as soon as I saw it take off and stay straight, I\u2019m like, \u2018that\u2019s going to be good,\u2019\u201d Rose said. \u201cThat\u2019s kind of why I was like, well, I can\u2019t do anything about it now \u2013 might as well start walking. I was kind of walking to get my putter and obviously ended up not needing my putter, which was exciting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI was dead set, loved the way it felt off the club, and then you get that moment where you\u2019re like, \u2018oh my God, it\u2019s gone in,\u2019 and that\u2019s kind of that surprise moment, which is amazing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
LAGC got off to a quick start, leading 2-0 after getting two points from a hammer on the second hole, baiting Jupiter into an early hammer acceptance. Things were steady otherwise until Jupiter Links got one back on No. 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n
LAGC ended up having just a one-point advantage late \u2013 despite being up by four earlier in the night, before Morikawa drilled a match-clinching 17-foot birdie putt.<\/p>\n
For Los Angeles, it was an important victory to put them to 1-1 on the season, versus having to dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHuge, obviously. We look like we’re in a great spot,\u201d Rose said. \u201cI think as a team we collectively grinded on it, (Morikawa) executed like a warrior there, and that put it to bed. We were all just good tonight, I think. We were all solid. There was no drama. Really, we were just always in control.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt like Collin stepping up in that critical moment and making the putt was huge because \u2026 0-2 at this point, especially (with) some strong matches ahead for us, as well, as there will be all the way to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n
LAGC ended up out-strategizing Jupiter Links. It saved two hammers for the final stretch and threw one on the penultimate hole after Morikawa was already in with a birdie. Jupiter Links had to accept to stay in the match, but Bhatia ended up missing a 10-foot birdie try and that closed the door.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jupiter Links was down four points through 11 holes but earned a point on No. 12 before there was a two-point swing on No. 13 \u2013 Max Homa made a birdie with the hammer in play to cut the lead to just one.<\/p>\n
LAGC was still able to execute on their well-strategized game plan, even though it came at the very end of the match.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Better late than never.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe guys played great. We played really smart. I think a lot of the time-outs we\u2019ve used have been on the greens to read putts and this was one of those that benefited us and benefitted myself because we were all reading it,\u201d Morikawa said of his match-clinching putt. \u201cWe were all on the same page.\u00a0<\/p>\n
