Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a> producer Michael Beinhorn has claimed frontman Anthony Kiedis is \u201ctone-deaf\u201d.<\/p>\n

Beinhorn worked with the band during their early years, firstly on their 1987 LP \u2018The Uplift Mofo Party Plan\u2019 in 1987 and 1989 follow up \u2018Mother\u2019s Milk\u2019.<\/p>\n

In a recent AMA session on the grunge subreddit, the producer took a series of questions from fans who wanted to know more about his time with the band, including one in relation to \u2018Knock Me Down\u2019 from \u2018Mother\u2019s Milk\u2019.<\/p>\n

The track is a tribute to the band\u2019s late guitarist, Hillel Slovak, who tragically died from a heroin overdose in 1988.<\/p>\n

The single version of the song features both guitarist John Frusciante<\/a> and Kiedis on vocals.<\/p>\n

A fan, who labelled it \u201cone of my favourite songs\u201d by the Chili Peppers, asked: \u201cWhy did John sing in that song? I know originally it was him and Anthony singing lead vocals, but Knock Me Down being a requiem for Hillel, why not only Anthony, the deceased\u2019s best friend?\u201d<\/p>\n

In response Beinhorn revealed: \u201cI\u2019m glad you love \u2018Knock Me Down\u2019 so much \u2013 it was a major departure from the RHCP sound up till that point. John sang the song (or rather, his voice was louder in the mix) because the song was melodic and Anthony was\/is tone-deaf (ie- he can\u2019t hear pitch).\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAt any rate, John essentially wrote the song, including the melody, so it wasn\u2019t entirely inappropriate for him to song it (plus he somewhat idolized Hillel).\u201d<\/p>\n

The producer then said that he \u201cnever found out what they thought of the final mix\u201d, but did recollect that Kiedis \u201cfreaked out \u2013 not in a good way\u201d when he played him \u201cthe tracks with the finished guitars on them for the first time\u201d. He also went on: \u201cI think the band kind of disowned the record because of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Hot Chili Peppers released their last material in 2022, after they welcomed guitarist Frusciante back into the line-up in 2019<\/a>. They released two albums,\u00a0\u2018Unlimited Love\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Return Of The Dream Canteen\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0at the time about what it was like to have the classic line-up back together<\/a>, Kiedis said the band were determined to bring something new to the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really didn\u2019t want to tell the same old story that we\u2019ve been hearing for the last 50 years in rock music,\u201d he explained. \u201cI liked reaching out in 10,000 directions and seeing what was out there. We weren\u2019t limiting ourselves but trying to tap into something that is honest and emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe biggest event, honestly, was John returning to the band. That was the most monumental change in our lives. And God was I down for anything and everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
