Truly. When conceiving this article, pegged to Pratt’s latest new sci-fi film, Mercy, which is out this week, we figured it would be a handful. He’s in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Jurassic World movies, does a few voices, but that’s about it, right? Um, no. It’s not.

What follows are 21, yes 21, sci-fi films that Pratt has played a role in. Some, such as the ones mentioned above, are big and obvious. Others? We literally forgot he was in at all. So, to rank them, we sort of went with a hodgepodge of overall quality, his contribution to the film, and whether or not you even remember that he was in it. That’s why some very, very good movies are going to rank lower than others. It’s a weird list, which we felt was appropriate. You’ll see what we mean below.

Pratt in Mercy – MGM TBD – Mercy (2026)

We haven’t seen Pratt’s latest, but we are cautiously optimistic about it. The caution comes from the January release date and lack of pre-release buzz. The optimism comes from the inventive premise—a man has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI program he created—as well as some solid trailers. The jury’s still out on this one, but we’ll see.

20. Passengers (2016)

On paper, Passengers had all the potential in the world. Pratt co-starring with the Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence. Big, expensive sci-fi canvas. But when you dial into it, it’s nearly impossible to overlook or forget that the general premise of the movie is a man (Pratt) dooms a woman to death (Lawrence) because he’s lonely and selfish. It would almost be okay if that was the point of the whole movie, but it’s largely glossed over. So, this unique combo of being a major film, big stars, and something you’ve heard of really tanks it down the list.

19. The Garfield Movie (2024)

This list will, unfortunately, take us in reverse order of Chris Pratt’s voiceover journey. He did a great job in movies that were ranked higher, which were hugely successful. By the time 2024’s The Garfield Movie came around, casting Pratt felt like the laziest, most uninspired choice ever. And the movie wasn’t far behind.

18. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

I honestly don’t hate Thor: Love and Thunder, but Pratt’s inclusion in it felt like a factory-mandated request due to the ending of Avengers: Endgame. And, because he doesn’t play an important role in any way, it ranks here.

17. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

The conclusion of Pratt’s personal Jurassic trilogy is simply atrocious. But, at least, he’s unforgettably present on screen the whole time, alongside some absolute legends.

Chris Pratt in The Electric State – Netflix 16. The Electric State (2025)

Yes, The Electric State is bad. But it’s bad in a large, eye-popping, watchable way. A perfect Netflix movie.

15. The Tomorrow War (2021)

The Tomorrow War is also not great, but it gets a bit of a bump up this list just because of the awesome premise, which it doesn’t quite live up to. (Soldiers from the present get sent to the future to try and save the world.)

14. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

I’m famously not a fan of this mega hit, but even people who do love it, and there are a lot, acknowledge that Pratt wasn’t exactly the best choice as Mario. And yet, he does his best.

Image: Universal 13. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

The first three Jurassic World movies get better going backwards in time. So, right in the middle is this first sequel, which is part normal Jurassic movie, part haunted house movie, and certainly watchable. Pratt and co-star Bryce Dallas Howard have a lot of good chemistry here, jumping off from the previous film.

12. Wanted (2008)

Did you remember Chris Pratt was in Wanted? I sure didn’t. The Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy-starring adaptation is a ton of fun, but is it really a Chris Pratt movie? Is it better because he’s in it? Not really. So it gets ranked here.

11. Jennifer’s Body (2009)

We love Jennifer’s Body, a film that was well ahead of its time and holds up quite well. But we have to balance that with the Chris Pratt-ness of it, and it’s not a particularly memorable role.

10. Her (2013)

The third in our “Chris Pratt Is in THAT Great Movie?” trilogy is this wonderful Spike Jonze entry. Again, like Wanted and Jennifer’s Body, we love this one, but Pratt’s supporting role isn’t super memorable. So, we’re throwing it a bit in the middle of the pack in terms of its Chris Pratt-o-Meter.

Image: Disney 9. Onward (2020)

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland together in a Pixar movie. What could possibly go wrong? Well, the world almost ended days after Onward hit theaters in early March 2020, so, a lot. And while Onward isn’t quite top-tier Pixar, it’s certainly a film that’s enjoyable, emotional, and uses Pratt in an excellent way.

8. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

Not as perfect as its predecessor, this 2019 sequel still gets points for being inventive and fun. Pratt’s everyman ability really shines in these films as the voice of Emmet. This one just suffers from not being as great as the original, which happens a lot on this list.

7. Jurassic World (2015)

The first Jurassic World gets a lot of crap, and that’s fine. But we still give it credit for being a decent, scary Jurassic movie while also fulfilling the promise of the original series in a new and exciting way. They actually opened a park! Chris Pratt trains raptors! It’s solid, and Pratt is one of the reasons.

6. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Again, we have to think about this in terms of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. So, while we prefer the pure scope and insanity of Endgame over its predecessor, Star-Lord only appears at the end and in a rather limited role.

Star-Lord in Infinity War – Marvel 5. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Pratt’s Star-Lord has a much more crucial role in Infinity War, which is why we rank it here. His back and forth with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is wonderful; the way the loss of Gamora impacts the plot is heartbreaking; and then he fades to dust in arguably Marvel’s most famous scene ever. Excellent stuff.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

If we’re talking Chris Pratt sci-fi movies, though, you had to know all of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies would be near the top of the list. James Gunn made three absolutely delightful, unforgettable films, and while Vol. 2 does see Pratt meet and battle his dad, played by Kurt Russell, it just isn’t quite as delightful or memorable as the other two. By a hair.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is probably a slightly better “Chris Pratt” movie, we prefer Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because it’s a better “Guardians” movie. Pratt’s Star-Lord has a great arc and a fantastic end to his story, but the fact that you can say that about all the film’s characters is what really makes it special.

Image: Warner Bros. 2. The Lego Movie (2014)

Remember almost 20 places ago, where I said we were going to take a journey through Chris Pratt’s voiceover career in reverse order? Well, we’re back at the beginning with not just his best voice-over performance, but his best animated film, period. The Lego Movie is so smart, so fun, and so surprising that we think about it often. And Pratt’s role as Emmet is a big reason why.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Ultimately, though, when you think about Chris Pratt and sci-fi, you have to go with the movie that made him a big sci-fi star. James Gunn’s choice to cast Pratt as the lovable Star-Lord was not just a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for Pratt’s entire persona. Instantly, he went from goofy guy on TV to action hero and never looked back. Oh, and the movie is probably the best Marvel Studios movie ever. So that helps too.

Want more io9 news?
