They make for an interesting couple of dudes, this pair of Sergio Castillo and Jamieson Sheahan.<\/p>\n

There is the walking-talking laugh track that is Castillo, a Mexican-American who calls Texas home, along with the always engaging Sheahan, a product of Bendigo, Australia who spent a couple of offseasons living off the grid<\/a> after finding a football home in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

Couple that duo with their mate in the Blue Bombers kicking battery \u2014 the perpetually smiling French Canadian long-snapper Ian Leroux \u2014 and there is never a dull moment among the trio and the impact any of them have on anyone who comes into their sphere daily.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Castillo and Sheahan both signed contract extensions to remain with the club this week rather than hit free agency next month \u2014 Castillo for two years, Sheahan for one \u2014 and the pair met with the media on Tuesday for a 30-minute all-over-the-map and highly entertaining chat.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the highlights\u2026<\/p>\n

THEIR OFFSEASON:<\/p>\n

Sheahan and his wife are now living in a house in Santa Barbara, California \u2014 their two year off-the-grid experiment over \u2014 and he\u2019s now back kicking weekly and playing pickleball.<\/p>\n

Castillo, meanwhile, just became a father again with a baby girl born earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have the same goal every offseason \u2014 get a booty and get abs and I haven\u2019t accomplished either of them going on 12 offseasons straight. Full-time daddy duties now and we\u2019ve got a second one who already got here. We have a baby girl \u2014 Luisa Renata. I\u2019ll tell you this, baby was born January 6th and until a couple days ago Adriana\u2019s stomach already has a two-pack and I was like, \u2018What am I doing wrong here?!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been fun. I\u2019m taking Jared to school. We just finished soccer season and are getting ready for baseball season for him. I\u2019m just here in old Canyon, Texas, America.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat have I been doing other than husband-daddy duties? Honestly, not much. Just trying to grow some hair. My wife\u2019s trying to do these remedies where she does this onion juice and puts it on my head \u2014 it\u2019s not working. She\u2019s the queen of remedies. If something is wrong, remedy. You wake up in a bad mood, there\u2019s a remedy. There\u2019s a remedy for everything. My remedy is a tequila shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

RETURNING TO THE BLUE BOMBERS:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the atmosphere, the fans,\u201d said Sheahan. \u201cI\u2019ve been a part of multiple different sporting scenarios and Winnipeg is elite. The fans are awesome and just the out-pouring of support on social media after we both signed was pretty awesome to see with people reaching out. It feels like home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spent three years up there already and I didn\u2019t want to play anywhere else, and I made that very clear early, and I was really glad we could come to a place where it was great for both of us, Serge and I, to sign back. The locker room is probably the best culture-environment I\u2019ve ever been in and that\u2019s Australia, the U.S. and Canada now.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just such a great place to head into work every day. It\u2019s the staff, the coaches, it\u2019s all the media guys and the fans are always incredible when they turn up in droves every game with all the sell outs. I get to spend the offseason in Santa Barbara but there\u2019s always a part of me that\u2019s itching to get back up to Winnipeg.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWinnipeg has been home to me for half of my career \u2014 six of the 12 years. Winnipeg is home,\u201d added Castillo. \u201cI feel homey there and I want to finish my career there. I want to retire there. I\u2019m trying to convince the wifey to move up there, but the -30 degrees does not convince here. I love the people there \u2014 I reminds me a little bit of Amarillo where people are very friendly, they\u2019re very homey.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing better than coming back to play with the band, with coach Mike Miller, Ian, Jams, and obviously Osh. He\u2019s a big part of why we\u2019ve been so successful. Why? Because our locker room is a locker room. It\u2019s fun to be around. I can be myself; Jams can be himself. We\u2019re all oddballs in a way, right? So, we\u2019re ready for another season of having the band together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

CASTILLO ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE IN THE U.S.:<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately, we\u2019re in Amarillo, Texas, where it\u2019s pretty far up north (from the U.S.-Mexico border). So, we\u2019ve been very fortunate where there\u2019s not a lot of incidents here. Now it is very sad to see what\u2019s going on around the country, and obviously I have relatives in different parts of the country where it is pretty unsettling. And so, it does cause worry. It\u2019s a mindset where you hope that nothing happens.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, even myself, right, just because of the colour that we are, it doesn\u2019t matter, what can happen even if you\u2019re a U.S. citizen. So, it\u2019s definitely something that can be very \u2013 you wouldn\u2019t think that as a parent, now you\u2019re just constantly worrying, and you want to be there for your family. I\u2019m sorry if I\u2019m a little bit of a wreck right now. It definitely does hit home, because it\u2019s affected through friends and stuff like that. Hopefully there can be a common ground where we can find a way to find a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

SHEAHAN ON LAST SEASON AND A LOOK AHEAD:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a really up and down year. We started pretty well, and then it was just sort of a rollercoaster all year. We had a lot of young guys come in last year and there\u2019s often a stigma around Winnipeg that we\u2019re aging and a lot of our top end guys are really senior and veterans, but there were a lot of young guys playing last year and a lot of first-timers and rookies to the CFL that have never even played Canadian ball.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was a great year of resilience. It was up and down. I\u2019s just about consistency for us. Our best was better than most when we played like that and obviously, our worst was what got us into a bit of trouble and that\u2019s why it was so up and down. We\u2019re going to have changes in the staff and we\u2019re going to have changes in personnel, but it does look like a core group of the guys have signed back and that\u2019s super exciting. And any time you can hand the ball off to Brady Oliveira, I think we\u2019ll be OK. I\u2019m looking forward to seeing what the new offence brings, and we\u2019ve spent a lot of resources getting our defence back who were fantastic again last year.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 It\u2019s going to be really exciting to see what the new offence brings with Brady and Zach (Collaros). It\u2019s just going to be about consistency, and obviously it\u2019s great consistency for me, Serge, and Ian to come back together and be the same operation. And that\u2019s one less thing I think that the big boss, Osh, doesn\u2019t have to worry about so much. He can focus on some other areas and just plug and play Serge and I and hopefully we bring that consistent sort of veteran presence in the special teams room.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They make for an interesting couple of dudes, this pair of Sergio Castillo and Jamieson Sheahan.
