Some, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a69976683\/watch-listen-to-audi-2026-f1-race-car-first-public-run-on-track\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a69976683\/watch-listen-to-audi-2026-f1-race-car-first-public-run-on-track\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"like Audi\" data-node-id=\"0.1\" class=\"body-link css-1uig388 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like Audi<\/a>, have already taken to the track for shakedowns and systems checks, while others are keeping their powder dry until official testing begins behind closed doors in Barcelona on January 25. McLaren falls into the latter category\u2014and the team hasn\u2019t even joined the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes in showing renders that give us some idea of how their new cars will look in their 2026 liveries. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Given that the team won the World Championship the last two seasons, McLaren\u2019s new car is perhaps the most eagerly awaited. Visiting media at the team\u2019s Woking base on Wednesday did get a glimpse of what the ML40 will look like in a plain testing livery, but it\u2019s not for publication until Monday morning, just before the real car takes to the track. For the time being, the public has to make do with a silhouette. <br data-node-id=\"1.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">However, the new McLaren will be one of the last, if not the last, to take to the track. The team is not undertaking a filming or shakedown day, instead going straight to Barcelona. Even then, the car won\u2019t appear until the second or third day of the five-day event. Teams can choose three of those five days to run, and McLaren is pushing things to the limit by opting for a late rollout to allow for the maximum amount of design time. The earlier you take to the track, the earlier you have to freeze key parameters.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Testing is underway elsewhere. The 2026 car is running this week on a dyno at AVL, the Austrian testing facility which has kit even McLaren doesn&#8217;t have in-house, prior to going to Spain. \u201cYou can sign off some fundamental systems of the car much more than what you can do when you run some of these sub-systems, like the gearbox in a gearbox rig, and dyno that we may have here at MTC,\u201d says team principal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a69096339\/mclaren-team-boss-andrea-stella-post-us-grand-prix-optimism\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a69096339\/mclaren-team-boss-andrea-stella-post-us-grand-prix-optimism\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Andrea Stella\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1uig388 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrea Stella<\/a>. \u201cAnd then the car will be in Barcelona for the shakedown on-track. We wanted to give ourselves as much time as possible for development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"silhouette of a formula 1 car with branding\" title=\"silhouette of a formula 1 car with branding\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1152\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/zge6pqia-6972434a548df.png\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/>McLaren<\/p>\n<p>All we\u2019ve seen of the MCL40 so far.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And every extra day of R&amp;D was priceless, which is why there was so much chat last year about when teams stopped working on their then-current 2025 cars and switched their full wind-tunnel-and-design focus to the new models. The amount of year-to-year change in the rules is unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cI think, never before [has] there been such a huge and simultaneous change of chassis, power unit and tires,\u201d says Stella. \u201cThe sheer volume of redesigning that we went through the last 20 months at McLaren has been probably the biggest design change, or in general, dealing with a new car project that I was part of. This all makes it extremely interesting to see how the cars will perform. The competitiveness order will be somehow mixed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Under the regulations, teams could not start proper wind tunnel testing or CFD work for these cars until January 2, 2025. However, as chief designer Rob Marshall explains, it was around Easter 2024 that McLaren began to explore initial concepts.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe rules landed, and we kind of picked them apart,\u201d Marshall says. \u201cAnd you basically assess them, and you realize that, actually, every single part of the car is impacted, literally every single part. So a bearing that&#8217;s buried inside your gearbox, which few people are even aware of\u2014the duty cycle on that bearing has changed. So that bearing has to change, and the oil feed to that bearing needs to change. And while you&#8217;re at it, you start to think, well, do we need to think about the lubricants as well? And that all spirals out into a project of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">More fundamental were the overall dimensional parameters of the 2026 cars, with 66 pounds lopped off the minimum weight and huge changes to the aerodynamic package as F1 moves away from the ground effect era. \u201cYou&#8217;ve got the &#8230; much more obvious changes that the car is going to be smaller,\u201d says Marshall. \u201cSo shorter, narrower, significantly lighter. And that there&#8217;s going to be [a] significant increase in the &#8230; brutality of the homologation testing, to try and make the car overall safer for the driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That\u2019s just the start, he adds. \u201cAnd then you can start thinking about how your suspension might change, and the loads that you need to accommodate. And it starts to snowball into a bigger and bigger and bigger project, and suddenly you realize, literally, it&#8217;s every last nut and bolt&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70055019\/audi-first-formula-1-car\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70055019\/audi-first-formula-1-car\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"a modern F1 car\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1uig388 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a modern F1 car<\/a> is a massive jigsaw puzzle, with thousands of parts flowing through the factory from design to manufacturing to testing before they all come together in the complete entity that will run on track in Spain next week. And even then, that entity will be subject to an intense programm of development and updating. As Stella notes, \u201cIt always looks a little bit of a miracle that actually all this becomes a car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The Italian is well aware that the success of the past two years means little right now, and that McLaren will have to work even harder this year to try to stay ahead of the opposition.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cWe are champions, but we don&#8217;t carry the &#8216;being champions&#8217; into &#8217;26,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone will start from the starting blocks, everyone will start from zero. And our internal narrative is anything we will achieve, we will have to deserve it, and we will have to earn it on the ground. So that&#8217;s our philosophy. This is why we&#8217;ve been ambitious with the 2026 car.
