Much of the global reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s speech at the World Economic Forum<\/a> on Wednesday has focused on his plans for Greenland<\/a> amid threats to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory \u2014 but several other notable moments may have been overlooked.<\/p>\n

The speech lasted more than an hour and touched on tariffs, the U.S. central bank and prescription drug prices, among other topics.<\/p>\n

There was also a reference to new \u201cweapons of warfare,\u201d with few other details.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the key takeaways from Trump\u2019s speech beyond what he shared on Greenland and his comments on Canada.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\tJerome Powell and the Federal Reserve\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

Trump said he plans to announce a new chairman of the\u00a0U.S. Federal Reserve<\/a> shortly as well.<\/p>\n

\t\t\tIt comes after the U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ] sent the central bank several subpoenas, threatening a criminal indictment<\/a> and after current Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said in a video statement he felt the DOJ was being weaponized by the Trump administration to gain influence over the Fed and the future of interest rates in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Central banks like the U.S. Fed and the Bank of Canada have a mandate<\/a> to keep economies stable by adjusting interest rates to maintain price stability while also encouraging growth.<\/p>\n

They reach these decisions independently, based on expert analysis and data, while strongly opposing outside influence from government leaders and agendas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be announcing a new Fed chairman in the not-too-distant future. I think he\u2019ll do a very good job. See, I gave away some of it \u2014 he. I did give that away,\u201d Trump said at Davos.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we have something. You get something. But somebody that\u2019s very respected, they\u2019re all respected. They\u2019re all great. Everyone that I interviewed is great. Everyone could do, I think a fantastic job. Problem is they change once they get the job, they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cYou know, they\u2019re saying everything I want to hear. And then they get the job, they\u2019re locked in for six years. They get the job and all of a sudden, \u2018let\u2019s raise rates a little bit.\u2019 I call them: \u2018Sir, we\u2019d rather not talk about this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In his speech, Trump claimed that prescription drug prices were going to come down worldwide, then said he used tariffs to pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to raise some prices in France.<\/p>\n

This comes after the White House announced in December 2025<\/a> that nine major pharmaceutical companies would slash the prices of medicines for the government\u2019s Medicaid program and for cash payers in Trump\u2019s latest bid to align U.S. costs with those in other wealthy nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrug prices are going to be coming down tremendously in all the nations, and I appreciate them doing it. But they did it. In all fairness, without tariffs, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to get it done,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder my most favoured nation policy for drug prices, the cost of prescription drugs is coming down by up to 90 per cent, depending on the way you calculate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s \u201cmost favoured nation policy\u201d aims to bring down some prescription drug prices in the U.S. to levels comparable to those in other nations, which may pay less for the same products.<\/p>\n

Trump continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Emmanuel [Macron, president of France], you\u2019re going to have to lift the price of that pill to $20, maybe $30.\u2019 Think of that. That means it\u2019s a doubling. A doubling of prescription drugs might be a tripling, might be a quadrupling. It\u2019s not easy,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018No, no, no,\u2019 he said. \u2018Here\u2019s the story, Emmanuel. The answer is you\u2019re going to do it. You\u2019re going to do it fast. And if you don\u2019t, I\u2019m putting a 25 per cent tariff on everything that you sell into the United States.’\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point in his speech, Trump referred to new U.S. \u201cweapons of warfare,\u201d without getting into specifics.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now our country and the world face much greater risks than it did ever before. Because of missiles, because of nuclear, because of weapons of warfare that I can\u2019t even talk about,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo weeks ago, they saw weapons that nobody ever heard of. They weren\u2019t able to fire one shot at us. They said what happened? Everything was discombobulated.\u201d<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t clear what instance Trump was referring to where these \u201cweapons\u201d were used, but the timeline of \u201ctwo weeks ago\u201d is close to the timing of the U.S. strikes on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro <\/a>on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, CNN reported<\/a>, citing multiple sources, on the purchase by the Pentagon of a device the report said is believed to be linked to the \u201cHavana syndrome\u201d cases that have plagued U.S. and Canadian diplomats in Cuba, beginning in 2016.<\/p>\n

Global News has not independently verified CNN\u2019s reporting, and Trump gave no further details on what type of weapons he was referring to in his speech.<\/p>\n
