{"id":428927,"date":"2026-01-23T22:16:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T22:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/428927\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T22:16:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T22:16:15","slug":"kinew-invokes-team-canada-approach-asking-ford-to-stand-down-on-crown-royal-boycott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/428927\/","title":{"rendered":"Kinew invokes Team Canada approach, asking Ford to stand down on Crown Royal boycott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is invoking the Team Canada spirit that Doug Ford has preached over the past year in an attempt to convince the Ontario premier to back down on his planned boycott of Crown Royal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After finding out international drinks maker Diageo planned to close a bottling plant in southwestern Ontario, Ford slowly emptied a bottle of the Canadian whisky onto the ground at an event over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The premier said he would remove <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/crown-royal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Crown Royal<\/a> from the shelves of all provincial liquor stores, forcing customers and bars into a boycott. Ford said he wouldn\u2019t change his mind if Diageo pressed ahead with its closure plans.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Crown Royal, however, is closely linked to jobs in other provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The whisky is made in Gimli, Man., with a bottling facility located in Quebec. Don\u2019t waste that. That\u2019s the good stuff,\u201d Kinew says in the video as he attempts to catch the spilt whisky in a glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Canadian whisky, supporting good-paying Canadian jobs in Gimli, Manitoba. So what do you say, Premier Ford? I think it tastes better when we work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford spent much of 2025 channelling the idea of a Team Canada approach to trade and economic co-operation \u2014 pushing to reduce internal trade barriers.<\/p>\n<p>The approach has shown signs of cracking early in the new year.
