{"id":430481,"date":"2026-01-24T15:18:43","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T15:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/430481\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T15:18:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T15:18:43","slug":"no-layoffs-but-80-medical-transcription-positions-are-shifting-to-ai-says-nape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/430481\/","title":{"rendered":"No Layoffs, but 80 Medical Transcription Positions are Shifting to AI says NAPE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/jerry-earle-nape.jpg\" class=\"header-image\" alt=\"No Layoffs, but 80 Medical Transcription Positions are Shifting to AI says NAPE\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NAPE President, Jerry Earle (VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>NAPE says NLHS is shifting medical transcription services to AI, affecting some 80 positions across the province. <\/p>\n<p>While the union has a \u201cno layoff\u201d contract with government, that\u2019s cold comfort for the workers involved. <\/p>\n<p>President Jerry Earle says medical transcription is highly specialized work, carried out primarily by women who work from home.<\/p>\n<p>He says the health authority is indicating that the workers affected will be shifted to other positions, but the list of positions is not yet available, and when it is, the workers will have 48 hours to make a decision. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s going to prove very difficult for affected employees, many of whom have been working for decades. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a number of life-altering factors that have to be taken into account here,\u201d says Earle. He cites one woman in rural Newfoundland who chose medical transcription because it suits her situation. <\/p>\n<p>She and her partner both work, but they only own one vehicle.
