{"id":430903,"date":"2026-01-24T20:07:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T20:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/430903\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T20:07:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T20:07:08","slug":"tennis-fans-irate-after-jannik-sinners-controversial-australian-open-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/430903\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennis Fans Irate After Jannik Sinner&#8217;s Controversial Australian Open Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bust out your tinfoil hats, tennis fans!<\/p>\n<p>PublishedJanuary 24, 2026 1:20 PM EST\u2022UpdatedJanuary 24, 2026 12:54 PM EST<\/p>\n<p>FacebookTwitterEmailCopy Link<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Four-time Grand Slam champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/category\/jannik-sinner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jannik Sinner<\/a> got a little more than he bargained for in his third round match at the Australian Open Friday night against American Eliott Spizzirri.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Unfortunately for Spizzirri, it had nothing to do with Sinner&#8217;s opponent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">After dropping the first set in a back and forth struggle, Sinner rallied back to win the second set 6-3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Then it happened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">With Spizzirri poised to go up a break in the third set, Sinner looked like his body was betraying him as he started to break down from cramps, thanks to the excessive heat of the Australian summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/sports\/jannik-sinner-revenge-carlos-alcaraz-wins-wimbledon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ: Jannik Sinner Gets Revenge On Carlos Alcaraz, Wins First Wimbledon Title<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It was at this moment, Sinner was cooked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Or at least he would have been, if the officials at the Australian Open didn&#8217;t step in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Thanks to something called the &#8220;Australian Open Heat Stress Scale,&#8221; the roof at Rod Laver Arena was ordered closed, and that was just the break Sinner needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The Italian tennis star never looked back from that point forward, winning three straight sets to advance to the fourth round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">To his credit, Spizzirri was gracious in defeat, though there were signs that he may have known his goose was cooked once the roof started closing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">While Spizzirri was classy after the defeat, the fine folks of X weren&#8217;t so quick to acquiesce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Many tennis fans on social media went full tinfoil hat conspiracy mode after the closing of the roof and made their voices heard all over everyone&#8217;s favorite former bird app.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Uh oh!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Looks like tennis has another controversy on its hands, and this one doesn&#8217;t even involve woke reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/sports\/australian-open-reporter-asks-american-players-anti-american-anti-trump-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">asking American players to denounce their home country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">On one hand, I understand there was a preexisting rule in place that said if the temperature reaches a certain point then they need to close the roof, but I also love a good conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">It is crazy that once it looked like Sinner was on the ropes, officials called a ten-minute timeout and closed the roof.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">I&#8217;m old enough to remember when dudes just retired from their matches because of cramps, but now I&#8217;m starting to sound like those guys who think the NBA was better when Bill Russell would dunk on off-duty firefighters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Congrats to Sinner on his big win, but I&#8217;m sure Spizzirri will always wonder &#8220;what if&#8221; when it comes to his 2026 Australian Open run.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bust out your tinfoil hats, tennis fans!
