Climber Alex Honnold maintains a \u201c99 percent\u201d plant-based diet, punctuated with an occasional Poke Bowl, his publicist told CNN ahead of the climb.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Honnold \u201cgrew up eating steak and drinking milk,\u201d and he said he only stopped eating meat \u2014 or at least seriously limited it \u2014 after extensive research and being concerned about his performance and carbon footprint, he wrote in an Instagram post in 2020.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkt2kxv400123b6pt2i9gaju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a fact that eating less meat and dairy is the simplest way for the average individual to lower their impact,\u201d he wrote, adding that \u201cdiet is a spectrum and it\u2019s better to do less harm than more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkt2kxv400133b6pq6jof4b6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Honnold said he used to be a \u201csuper picky eater\u201d in the film \u201cFree Solo\u201d that documented his ascent of El Capitan in 2017.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkt2kxv400143b6punl50i65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBetween (the ages of) 20 and 24, I basically decided that I had to start eating vegetables, and then sort of systematically introduced myself to vegetables, like one at a time, which worked pretty well,\u201d he said then.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkt2kxv400153b6pmod0w78m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ahead of scaling Taipei 101, however, Honnold spent his evenings tasting dumplings at the world-renowned restaurant chain Din Tai Fung, which has a branch under the building and serves vegetarian options.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkt2kxv400163b6p9p1rokx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe loves dumplings and has been having a great time eating the local cuisine and all the vegetable dumplings,\u201d his publicist told CNN.\n
