The San Francisco 49ers<\/a> are retaining a key member of their coaching staff as they look to rebound from an injury-plagued season that fell short of expectations.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic,<\/a> offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has withdrawn his name from consideration for head-coaching vacancies across the NFL.<\/p>\n

This offseason had featured 10 head-coaching openings, with the Buffalo Bills<\/a>, Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>, Cleveland Browns<\/a> and Arizona Cardinals<\/a> still in search of new leadership.<\/p>\n

Several offensive coordinator positions are also available, and Kubiak \u2014 the son of former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl\u2013winning head coach Gary Kubiak \u2014 had been viewed as a top candidate, particularly for defensive-minded head coaches seeking an offensive counterpart.<\/p>\n

However, any interview for another offensive coordinator role would have required approval from head coach Kyle Shanahan, as such a move would be considered lateral. Shanahan made it clear he would not allow that.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe calls a lot of plays here,\u201d Shanahan said recently. \u201cHe\u2019s our offensive coordinator, so I don\u2019t know, why would you let him be somebody else\u2019s offensive coordinator?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kubiak has been with the 49ers since 2021 and has steadily climbed the ranks on Shanahan\u2019s staff. He served as the team\u2019s assistant quarterbacks coach when San Francisco selected Brock Purdy in the 2022 draft, moved into the role of passing game specialist in 2024, and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2025. Shanahan first handed Kubiak play-calling duties in the 2024 regular-season finale.<\/p>\n
