You\u2019ll know if you\u2019re affected, because your PC will show you nothing but the Black Screen of Death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Microsoft,\u201d <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-suspects-some-pcs-might-not-boot-after-windows-11-january-2026-update-kb5074109\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-suspects-some-pcs-might-not-boot-after-windows-11-january-2026-update-kb5074109\/\" aria-label=\"Windows Latest\">Windows Latest<\/a> reports, \u201caffected PCs could suddenly stop booting and land on the Black Screen of Death (BSOD) error with stop code UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-millions-of-outlook-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Microsoft Confirms Emergency Update For Millions Of Outlook Users\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-millions-of-outlook-users\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesMicrosoft Confirms Emergency Update For Millions Of Outlook UsersBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/admin.cloud.microsoft\/Adminportal\/Home?source=applauncher#\/windowsreleasehealth\/:\/issue\/WI1221934\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/admin.cloud.microsoft\/Adminportal\/Home?source=applauncher#\/windowsreleasehealth\/:\/issue\/WI1221934\" aria-label=\"says\">says<\/a> it has \u201creceived a limited number of reports of an issue in which devices are failing to boot.\u201d It has asked affected users and admins to report issued. In reality, it\u2019s too soon to know how widely this impacts. All update issues start as \u201climited\u201d numbers, but then it becomes clear with some that it\u2019s much more widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Thus far we know it affects both Windows 11 25H2 and Windows 11 24H2 with KB5074109 installed. This mandatory update \u201cpatches as many as a hundred known security issues, which is why it\u2019s installed automatically on PCs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fail to reboot issue<\/p>\n<p>Windows Latest<\/p>\n<p>This comes just hours after reports that another <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-millions-of-outlook-users\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-millions-of-outlook-users\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"emergency update\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">emergency update<\/a> has been issued by Microsoft to affect other problems besetting users, specifically <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/classic-outlook-profiles-with-pop-accounts-and-psts-hang-after-windows-updates-on-january-13-2026-590fe356-ecc2-49f4-b9e3-bd39fafa58f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/classic-outlook-profiles-with-pop-accounts-and-psts-hang-after-windows-updates-on-january-13-2026-590fe356-ecc2-49f4-b9e3-bd39fafa58f6\" aria-label=\"Outlook\">Outlook<\/a> becoming \u201c<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/microsoft-makes-outlook-completely-unusable-as-windows-11-25h224h2-update-breaks-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/microsoft-makes-outlook-completely-unusable-as-windows-11-25h224h2-update-breaks-it\/\" aria-label=\"unusable\">unusable<\/a>.\u201d And it comes a week after the first emergency update for January fixed failed shutdowns and remote logins. All told, a difficult few weeks for Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>That 0xED error code \u201cis typically related to system corruption, a damaged BIOS\/boot, or hardware failure, specifically the drive.\u201d Affected devices &#8220;show a black screen with the message \u2018Your device ran into a problem and needs a restart. In that case, you can use an ISO to clean install Windows. The good news is that only a limited set of devices is affected.
