Following a formal request from Mercedes, the Nuerburgring Langstrecken-Serie moved its second race of the season back by one week to slide into an F1 offweek, in the hopes of courting four-time champion Max Verstappen to another race.<\/p>\n

Verstappen needs to race one NLS date at the start of the season to be allowed to race in this summer\u2019s 24 Hours of Nurburgring. <\/p>\n

Originally reported by the German site Motorsport-total<\/a>, Mercedes and Red Bull have both approved his participation, with Mercedes going as far as to make a formal request last week. Leaving the only obstacle a completed preparatory race for Verstappen to race 24 hours at the ‘Green Hell.’<\/p>\n

The only problem was that when the NLS released its schedule in September of last year, all the early dates fell on F1 weekends. <\/p>\n

Moving the second race from March 28th to March 21st allows Verstappen to race in between Formula 1\u2019s second and third rounds, the Chinese Grand Prix and Japanese Grand Prix, respectively.<\/p>\n

NLS says its official reason for the move is to leverage this gap and give the best drivers a chance to compete in their series. <\/p>\n

“This adjustment leverages a gap in the F1 calendar between the Grands Prix in China and Japan,” NLS wrote in an Instagram post. “By aligning with the international racing schedule, we enable top-tier drivers to compete in the NLS. This move increases our global reach to the benefit of all teams, participants, and the entire Nurburgring region.”<\/p>\n
