{"id":433241,"date":"2026-01-26T00:11:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T00:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/433241\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T00:11:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T00:11:18","slug":"health-groups-sue-epa-over-insecticide-that-causes-testicular-damage-in-rats-us-environmental-protection-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/433241\/","title":{"rendered":"Health groups sue EPA over insecticide that causes testicular damage in rats | US Environmental Protection Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Public health groups are <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCydHCbG70wcdabaaM9rXedBbrZpL-2FnBXALfDOpP7JC4f1LkbNy1p9YKptHHWo-2BvO1Pzc96zArF9Zas9FcsxpZHJl-2BO4Cp48dKPyWgZB5OY1Si7cDmROj0x-2B7bTzxZBi906H6vr2Vr6MVicFzfTLIET3nesN6vYwu-2FqOtYuyX3ZQ5-7Cl_lHfhL5FQIIAolkXgQycRaoZ8r0GqXkvzkUp2VESycz2E-2FSraiWN1-2Fbv0toQeDaafb60CnNqGJQcGSdpYYnsxCysGEIx9GIyHPclTwjeTLFvO3gc-2FhOWWdG2AdnfZbQBkHJG-2BxaIv3dlhC9Bi4ZjFEsCJgXmEkDB8MslXCRuvFhp7E5XGJZ26KkZ37PThjaYxVGz8t8coFg-2F1yMF8Rdr4OEcbWGPTYyCaCQMGl5OVmNT7W9Mo4-2BU7b5q9YIaz5Fd2jAyCumGo-2Fq7zHl9z-2BPbBKxqv4bT5PqkpqwgzgxsuUI-2FJKrpiRch6YVtiL7HncgDIKRP7gCpqvop-2Fk1ogSCa6Sw-3D-3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suing<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/epa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA) over its approval of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/pfas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pfas<\/a> \u201cforever chemical\u201d insecticide that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document\/EPA-HQ-OPP-2021-0641-0309\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">industry research found<\/a> likely reduces testicle size, lowers sperm count and harms the liver in rats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The pesticide, isocycloseram, is used on food crops and could especially threaten children and developing fetuses, but the EPA did not factor those risks into its safety assessment, said Nathan Donley, environmental health science director with the Center for Biological Diversity, a plaintiff in the suit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The lawsuit marks the latest flare-up in an ongoing controversy over the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/nov\/18\/california-pfas-forever-chemicals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forever chemicals in pesticides<\/a>, which public health advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/07\/forever-chemicals-found-insecticides-study\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovered under the Biden administration<\/a>, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/nov\/11\/trump-pfas-forever-chemical-pesticide\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accelerated under Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The pesticide program has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/07\/maha-maga-feud-chemicals-pesticides\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caused friction<\/a> between the Robert F Kennedy Jr.-aligned Make America Healthy Again (Maha) movement, which broadly opposes pesticide use, and Maga elements atop the Trump administration aligned with pesticide and chemical industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Environmental groups pin blame for the decision to greenlight the pesticide on leadership in the EPA\u2019s chemical safety office, which is now includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/18\/senate-epa-confirmation-douglas-troutman-lobbyist\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former industry lobbyists<\/a>. Donley said the groups are \u201cgoing to fight like hell to make sure these forever pesticides aren\u2019t allowed to poison our grandchildren\u2019s grandchildren\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cApproval of this dangerous pesticide spotlights how the industry puppet masters running the EPA chemicals office are making a mockery of chemical oversight,\u201d Donley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pfas are a class of about 16,000 chemicals typically used to make products that resist water, stains and heat. They are called \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they do not naturally break down; they accumulate and are linked to cancer, kidney disease, liver problems, immune disorders, birth defects and other serious health problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The pesticide is used on crops such as apples, oranges, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, cucumbers, peaches, almonds, wheat and oats, as well as on lawns and golf courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An EPA spokesperson said in a statement to the Guardian that the agency does not comment on current litigation, but \u201cis committed to tackling Pfas and protecting children\u2019s health\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cArmed with gold-standard science, we are Making America Healthy Again, carrying out our core mission of protecting human health and the environment,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kelly Ryerson, a Maha advocate who has discussed similar issues with EPA officials, lambasted the agency for approving another Pfas pesticide, and suggesting it wasn\u2019t aligned with Maha values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s another example the chemical industry lobbyists running the EPA prioritizing corporate profits and deregulation over the very fertility of men in our country, and it\u2019s yet another pesticide that affects our ability to procreate, and our grandchildren\u2019s children\u2019s ability to procreate,\u201d Ryerson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The EPA wrote in its human health risk assessment for the substance that long-term dietary exposure in rats appeared to lead to \u201creduced testes size, increased incidence and severity of tubular degeneration in the testes, reduced sperm and cellular debris in the epididymis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The EPA also approved the pesticide despite the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apvma.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/105636-220926_20_gazette_-_public_release_summary_on_the_evaluation_of_the_active_constituent_isocycloseram_in_the_product_simodis_plinazolin_technology_insecticide.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian regulators found<\/a> it induced skeletal malformations in fetal rats, and other research showed the chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCxTmvdSH-2Bljzs0ZwuSEyz05J5JauPRvypN7rvzVD-2FgnRuHnbw-2BYGiM6u0OyEYAx5kKHO23R6YGNpDTWT9K8OTH0-3DaySd_lHfhL5FQIIAolkXgQycRaoZ8r0GqXkvzkUp2VESycz2E-2FSraiWN1-2Fbv0toQeDaafb60CnNqGJQcGSdpYYnsxCysGEIx9GIyHPclTwjeTLFvO3gc-2FhOWWdG2AdnfZbQBkHJG-2BxaIv3dlhC9Bi4ZjFEsCJgXmEkDB8MslXCRuvFhp7E5XGJZ26KkZ37PThjaYxcrlJaHYreBPbw1OHBe-2BgDZ-2FS8a78Y7L0oIXctk6fLqDdiKxmg1RL36OaI5hHrEs4vz1AE1u2wD99APKkuSyPC5ID7leJbrmMnyokGPeDjqYaG3nQco4D9W-2BCgge82ReZFtxypbHHDzREUDsgi-2F-2F03Q-3D-3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may be carcinogenic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At least 60% of active ingredients approved for use in common pesticides at the federal level over the last 10 years fit the most widely accepted definition of Pfas, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/jul\/23\/pfas-pesticides-epa-research\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023 analysis of EPA data found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While isocycloseram itself lasts in the environment for at least hundreds of years, it is also <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCxTmvdSH-2Bljzs0ZwuSEyz06zYH79tA2LEYBq3FwTkgUTWPc3szjn1WHPeJvnqqRkGsgI3Q2byfxtSYm5HTakKGw-3DgJhQ_lHfhL5FQIIAolkXgQycRaoZ8r0GqXkvzkUp2VESycz2E-2FSraiWN1-2Fbv0toQeDaafb60CnNqGJQcGSdpYYnsxCysGEIx9GIyHPclTwjeTLFvO3gc-2FhOWWdG2AdnfZbQBkHJG-2BxaIv3dlhC9Bi4ZjFEsCJgXmEkDB8MslXCRuvFhp7E5XGJZ26KkZ37PThjaYxcrlJaHYreBPbw1OHBe-2BgDUiSi0USgCDtORRH4FW0ARITOzLGWX-2F6yAZdSY1EK4-2F0g27JIYxUy-2FaMJCGYzIg5Xg-2B7PrqDMdfUK4dfbP8sH-2Fwbw-2BaYdCakGedkfi4jTbnMAO5v8fZjNciodbaBQxEMew-3D-3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known<\/a> to degrade into 40 smaller Pfas chemicals, some of which are even more highly persistent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">That also creates risks to wildlife. Donley noted that the EPA\u2019s own science predicts the pesticide would have significant adverse effects on more than 1,000 threatened and endangered species. It is also highly toxic to pollinators, which could be <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCxTmvdSH-2Bljzs0ZwuSEyz06zYH79tA2LEYBq3FwTkgUTWPc3szjn1WHPeJvnqqRkGsntlru6pXDoxALVdFF-2BUao-3DKm8Y_lHfhL5FQIIAolkXgQycRaoZ8r0GqXkvzkUp2VESycz2E-2FSraiWN1-2Fbv0toQeDaafb60CnNqGJQcGSdpYYnsxCysGEIx9GIyHPclTwjeTLFvO3gc-2FhOWWdG2AdnfZbQBkHJG-2BxaIv3dlhC9Bi4ZjFEsCJgXmEkDB8MslXCRuvFhp7E5XGJZ26KkZ37PThjaYxcrlJaHYreBPbw1OHBe-2BgDfiUMwzJL4XqgmO-2BWb2hb71zQ3u0X8ac-2FsjdCmdFiEufW0lgc9jmUsEfW94FiiqxLbhfrbRddELY3ooW7-2F3qI6HTdpEL-2B8Z54z0NYbTUDW8esL-2Fla-2FJIJ-2F2ulZabt4Uq6w-3D-3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exposed to<\/a> 1,500 times the lethal level of the pesticide just by collecting nectar and pollen near treated fields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The substance was still approved because the risk assessment process \u201cis like Swiss cheese\u201d and full of bad assumptions about risk, Donley said. He alleged the EPA did not follow a Food Quality Protection Act mandate to factor in child safety, which requires it to lower the health risk threshold tenfold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The mandate includes an exception to the child safety rule, if scientific evidence shows it is unnecessary, Donley said. But the EPA largely relied on industry science, and there is a dearth of independent review, which, Donley said, means the EPA does not know the risk to children. The EPA also did not factor Australian study that found skeletal deformation in rats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meanwhile, the agency does not consider the cumulative effects of exposures. People are exposed to potentially dozens of dangerous substances, including Pfas, that are sprayed on food crops or other uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere\u2019s this assumption that everyone is exposed in a vacuum to this chemical when in real life we\u2019re all exposed to a soup of this stuff and that can substantially increase the risk,\u201d Donley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">All pesticide decisions run through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/18\/senate-epa-confirmation-douglas-troutman-lobbyist\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top four positions<\/a> at the EPA\u2019s chemical safety and pollution prevention office, Donley said. Kyle Kunkler, a former lobbyist for the pro-pesticide American Soybean Association, runs the pesticide office. He works under two <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCw0GHnTk9-2FEwPLsqELmaRPdXNqHnvxn74kPgNHC-2FLbaAUlP8Iw1xbQYjf-2F9YxkZICs9OyZWXtUNSrffDPXXUz9g-3DuwEl_lHfhL5FQIIAolkXgQycRaoZ8r0GqXkvzkUp2VESycz2E-2FSraiWN1-2Fbv0toQeDaafb60CnNqGJQcGSdpYYnsxCysGEIx9GIyHPclTwjeTLFvO3gc-2FhOWWdG2AdnfZbQBkHJG-2BxaIv3dlhC9Bi4ZjFEsCJgXmEkDB8MslXCRuvFhp7E5XGJZ26KkZ37PThjaYxcrlJaHYreBPbw1OHBe-2BgDZ4zWS3xnZeTgV2kA8YvAFnhcO-2Bx-2F5lXryR0ht9X5oIrrNpnOCHzKOy1OeT-2B4kFKpmJt8A8SnnalY4QxxYFVylJ6WwZZc-2FghfgEVNGmOgVME0xCWF6CB04iwztrENrWcnw-3D-3D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former lobbyists<\/a> for the American Chemistry Council, an industry trade group.
