I (18F) have been living in a dorm with one other person. We are both students.<\/p>\n
I have class five days a week.<\/p>\n
Since the start of the semester, my roommate has been commenting on my sleep habits.<\/p>\n
This was understandable at first. I tend to sleep for 15+ hours straight. I sleep at invariable times.<\/p>\n
This includes during the day and from the afternoon through the night.<\/p>\n
This young woman is suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.<\/p>\n
I have chronic fatigue syndrome.<\/p>\n
On top of that, I have an extremely frantic schedule.<\/p>\n
So, any chance I get, I will come back to the dorm to rest.<\/p>\n
It has been difficult to deal with my condition. I have been on medication since the onset of the symptoms.<\/p>\n
I am currently taking three or more types of pills to control my sleep patterns.<\/p>\n
Her roommate would always comment about how she\u2019s always sleeping.<\/p>\n
The thing is, she will come in whenever I\u2019m in bed.<\/p>\n
She will ask why I\u2019m \u201calways asleep\u201d and why I\u2019m \u201cnever up.\u201d<\/p>\n
This makes me feel annoyed because it\u2019s not constructive.<\/p>\n
I would probably understand if these comments led to a discussion.<\/p>\n
That discussion would be about how my sleeping impacts her life in some way.<\/p>\n
I would also understand if she asked me to be more considerate of her.<\/p>\n
She thinks the comments were unwarranted.<\/p>\n
However, she is at home probably half the time.<\/p>\n
I take on the majority of the housework while she\u2019s away.<\/p>\n
She rarely even sees me during the week. This is why I find these comments unwarranted.<\/p>\n
I have also never asked her to stay quiet while I\u2019m asleep.<\/p>\n
I have never asked her to change her lifestyle in any sort of way.<\/p>\n
She thinks that her roommate should properly talk to her if she has an issue with it.<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t control when I fall asleep.<\/p>\n
So I don\u2019t expect everyone to adjust their lives according to my condition.<\/p>\n
She is free to be as loud as she pleases.<\/p>\n
If she felt like she couldn\u2019t do that, she hasn\u2019t brought it up in conversation to me.<\/p>\n
As far as I know, my sleeping does not impact her whatsoever.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s not here for the majority of the time. I am also out of the house frequently.<\/p>\n
She feels offended by the comments, but can\u2019t really do anything about her condition.<\/p>\n
This is a sensitive issue for me.<\/p>\n
Even when she doesn\u2019t say these things, I can\u2019t help but feel lazy and useless.<\/p>\n
This is even though it\u2019s something I can\u2019t control.<\/p>\n
The medication helps somewhat, so I can function.<\/p>\n
But this has been a lifelong issue. I can\u2019t seem to come home just to rest.<\/p>\n
