{"id":434629,"date":"2026-01-26T16:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T16:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434629\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T16:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T16:55:08","slug":"bunnings-accused-of-greenwashing-timber-amid-concerns-about-suppliers-illegal-logging-new-south-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434629\/","title":{"rendered":"Bunnings accused of \u2018greenwashing\u2019 timber amid concerns about supplier\u2019s illegal logging | New South Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One of Australia\u2019s biggest environment groups has accused Bunnings of \u201cgreenwashing\u201d its timber, claiming it may have sold products illegally logged by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/new-south-wales\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New South Wales<\/a> forestry agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Wilderness Society (TWS) has asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to investigate the hardware and garden chain because it could be selling unlawfully logged timber, despite Bunnings\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/trade.bunnings.com.au\/about-us\/responsible-sourcing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">policies and websites<\/a> promoting responsible sourcing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The complaint cites the NSW Forestry Corporation\u2019s string of convictions for breaches of environmental regulations, and alleges timber from operations later found to have involved unlawful activity may have made it to Bunnings\u2019 shelves via third-party wood suppliers<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TWC has asked the ACCC to examine whether Bunnings\u2019 claims about responsible sourcing had the effect of making its timber \u201cseem better (or less harmful) for the environment than it really is\u201d. The group alleged this would amount to misleading or deceptive conduct, if proven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ACCC has confirmed it had received the TWS complaint, which it said \u201cwill be assessed in accordance with our Compliance and Enforcement Policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe ACCC does not generally comment on reports it receives or potential investigations,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The group\u2019s NSW campaigns manager, Victoria Jack, said that \u201cBunnings customers don\u2019t want their next project to come at the expense of native forests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBunnings makes out that its timber is from legal sources and doesn\u2019t impact endangered species. Yet our research tells a different story,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat customers are paying for at the checkout could be timber made of greater glider or swift parrot habitat, which could even be illegally logged. Australia\u2019s forests are too precious to be for sale on a Bunnings shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bunnings sells timber sourced from NSW Forestry Corporation via a number of local suppliers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A spokesperson said: \u201cBunnings is committed to sourcing timber and wood products which originate from compliant and well-managed forest operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They said Bunnings required natural forest timber products to be sourced from forests independently certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNSW Forestry Corporation meets this requirement,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Unprecedented situation\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The state-owned forestry corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/may\/11\/nsw-forestry-agency-called-criminal-organisation-by-critics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been convicted<\/a> of more than a dozen environmental offences and is facing charges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/aug\/29\/environmentalists-urge-abolition-of-forestry-corporation-after-allegations-it-failed-to-protect-endangered-species\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on dozens more<\/a>. A judgment in the land and environment court last year found the agency was likely to reoffend and had poor prospects of rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In correspondence with TWS in November, the NSW Environment Protection Authority said it \u201chas not previously seized timber harvested in connection with alleged native vegetation offences\u201d to prevent it from entering the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW Forestry Corporation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestrycorporation.com.au\/sustainability\/certification\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">native forest operations have been certified<\/a> under the Responsible Wood scheme endorsed by the PEFC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But TWS\u2019 complaint raises concerns that the agency has retained this certification, despite its convictions for environmental offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof David Heilpern, a former magistrate and the dean of law at Southern Cross University who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/may\/11\/nsw-forestry-agency-called-criminal-organisation-by-critics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">likened the NSW forestry agency to a \u201ccriminal organisation\u201d<\/a>, said he hoped the TWS complaint would be taken seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt arises from the unprecedented situation where a government supplier of a product has been convicted of a series of offences relating to illegal activities on public land,\u201d Heilpern said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt creates huge hurdles for consumers, and retailers, who wish to ensure or represent that the product is not tainted by this illegality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt further raises the issue of how to deal with a product that should not have been logged \u2013 but is. We have other legislation and regimes that deal with proceeds of crime, but not for situations like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A NSW Forestry Corporation spokesperson said \u201ctimber harvesting in NSW public native forests is lawful and conducted under strict regulations, approvals and oversight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They said the agency operated under one of the \u201cmost stringent forestry regulatory frameworks in the world\u201d with logging subject to detailed planning and environmental rules, regular inspections and third-party certification.
