{"id":434800,"date":"2026-01-26T18:35:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T18:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434800\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T18:35:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T18:35:15","slug":"termination-shock-could-make-the-cost-of-climate-damage-even-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434800\/","title":{"rendered":"Termination shock could make the cost of climate damage even higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"\" width=\"1350\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_281950484.jpg\"   loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" data-image-context=\"Article\" data-image-id=\"2513174\" data-caption=\"Solar geoengineering could save the ice sheets \u2013 but stopping it could be catastrophic\" data-credit=\"Martin Zwick\/REDA\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ArticleImageCaption__Title\">Solar geoengineering could save the ice sheets \u2013 but stopping it could be catastrophic<\/p>\n<p class=\"ArticleImageCaption__Credit\">Martin Zwick\/REDA\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Solar geoengineering could be even more costly than unabated global warming if it is cut off suddenly, leading to a \u201ctermination shock\u201d of rapidly rebounding temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>As the rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2504092-fossil-fuel-emissions-rise-again-but-chinas-are-levelling-off\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climb<\/a>, interest is growing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2461498-is-solar-geoengineering-research-having-its-moment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar radiation modification<\/a> (SRM) to cool the planet, such as by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2487346-geoengineering-could-avoid-climate-tipping-points-but-not-if-we-delay\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spreading sulphur dioxide aerosols<\/a> in the stratosphere to block sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>But solar geoengineering would need to continue uninterrupted for centuries, or the warming that was \u201cmasked\u201d would come roaring back at a faster rate. Known as termination shock, this rebound would give humans and animals little time to adapt to the heat and could trigger climate tipping points like ice sheet collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Based on established relationships between temperature increases and GDP loss, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atmosfera.unam.mx\/ciencias-atmosfericas\/clima-y-sociedad\/francisco-estrada-porrua\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francisco Estrada<\/a> at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and his colleagues modelled the risks of climate inaction compared with those of solar geoengineering.<\/p>\n<p>If humanity fails to reduce fossil fuel emissions, temperatures could reach a median 4.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, causing economic damages of $868 billion, the researchers estimate. A hypothetical stratospheric aerosol injection programme beginning in 2020 that kept temperature rise to about 2.8\u00b0C could halve those damages.<\/p>\n<p>But if the aerosol programme was suddenly terminated in 2030 and temperatures rebounded 0.6\u00b0C over the next eight years, damages could top $1 trillion by the end of the century. While the numbers might be higher or lower in real life, \u201cthe message doesn\u2019t really change\u201d, says Estrada. \u201cIt would be much worse if we have a termination shock than if we did nothing, if we had unabated climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study is innovative in estimating damages based not just on total warming but also on how fast it arrives, says <a href=\"https:\/\/gwagner.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gernot Wagner<\/a> at Columbia University in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Solar geoengineering \u201cis riskier than it looks at first glance\u201d, he says. \u201cThat is the contribution here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Silicon Valley start-up Make Sunsets has already <a href=\"https:\/\/makesunsets.com\/pages\/new-about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> more than 200 balloons of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere to sell emission offsets. That included a launch in Mexico that prompted the government to threaten a geoengineering ban.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli company Stardust has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/geoengineering-startup-hires-powerhouse-lobby-shop\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised<\/a> $75 million and lobbied the US government about solar geoengineering. Two-thirds of scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2498137-exclusive-climate-scientists-expect-attempts-to-dim-the-sun-by-2100\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expect<\/a> large-scale SRM this century, according to a survey carried out by New Scientist last year.<\/p>\n<p>To cool Earth by 1\u00b0C, at least 100 aircraft would have to <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1029\/2024EF005567\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spread<\/a> many millions of tonnes of sulphur dioxide in the stratosphere every year without interruption by political disputes, wars, pandemics or other black swan events.<\/p>\n<p>Today, major players like the US are actively undermining international cooperation on climate policy, but this kind of cooperation would be required to avoid termination shock and make SRM a net benefit, the researchers conclude.<\/p>\n<p>Graphing different combinations of parameters, they found aerosol injection is only likely to reduce climate damages if the probability of its termination in any given year is just a few tenths of a per cent, or if that termination could be tapered off over more than 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>If countries slash emissions and only a small amount of geoengineered cooling is needed, aerosol injection could be beneficial at termination probabilities up to about 10 per cent. Although a 10 per cent probability of termination in any given year means a 99.9 per cent chance of failure over the course of a century, the temperature rebound should be small in this low-emissions scenario.<\/p>\n<p>This need for international climate cooperation reveals what Estrada calls the \u201cgovernance paradox\u201d of solar geoengineering. \u201cThe probability of failure must be very, very low; you have to be able to manage if things go wrong and importantly you have to have very good governance for mitigation,\u201d he says. But \u201cif you\u2019re able\u2026 to manage the problem of global mitigation of greenhouse gases, then you wouldn\u2019t really need SRM\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>These findings suggest research into solar geoengineering is not necessarily a \u201cslippery slope\u201d to its deployment, as some have argued, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.au.dk\/en\/cmbaum@btech.au.dk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chad Baum<\/a> at Aarhus University, Denmark.
