{"id":434979,"date":"2026-01-26T20:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T20:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434979\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T20:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T20:31:08","slug":"ground-breaking-new-technology-allows-scientists-to-observe-another-stars-coronal-mass-ejection-for-the-first-time-ever-twistedsifter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/434979\/","title":{"rendered":"Ground-Breaking New Technology Allows Scientists To Observe Another Star\u2019s Coronal Mass Ejection For The First Time Ever \u00bb TwistedSifter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-670148\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-670148\" src=\"https:\/\/twistedsifter.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load-0.7\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" alt=\"An artist's impression of a CME\" width=\"800\" height=\"158\" title=\"Ground Breaking New Technology Allows Scientists To Observe Another Stars Coronal Mass Ejection For The First Time Ever\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CME.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-670148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA<\/p>\n<p>The closest that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) come to most people\u2019s awareness is when they\u2019re mentioned as a cause of unseasonable or unusually widespread displays of the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights.<\/p>\n<p>They sound dramatic and they are dramatic: during a CME, the star (in our case, our Sun) hurls out burning material (plasma) into space, which travels through space, affecting the magnetic fields of nearby planets.<\/p>\n<p>Here, the magnetic fields send the particles (known as solar wind) toward the poles, resulting in borealis as the charged particles interact with the planet\u2019s atmosphere, while geomagnetic storms can affect satellites and communications systems too.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, CMEs had only been observed on Earth from our Sun, but recently researchers happened across something quite incredible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-640739\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-640739\" src=\"https:\/\/twistedsifter.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load-0.7\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" alt=\"The Northern Lights above trees\" width=\"800\" height=\"200\" title=\"Ground Breaking New Technology Allows Scientists To Observe Another Stars Coronal Mass Ejection For The First Time Ever\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Northern-Lights.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-640739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pexels<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09715-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">paper<\/a> published in the journal\u00a0Nature, researchers explained that, thanks to a Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) radio telescope, they\u2019ve detected a CME from another star \u2013 in this case a red dwarf \u2013 for the very first time, and from 130 light years away.<\/p>\n<p>This is fascinating news, as the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON)\u2019s Joe Callingham explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/XMM-Newton\/First_confirmed_sighting_of_explosive_burst_on_nearby_star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a>, breaking new ground for astrophysics:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAstronomers have wanted to spot a CME on another star for decades. Previous findings have inferred that they exist, or hinted at their presence, but haven\u2019t actually confirmed that material has definitively escaped out into space. We\u2019ve now managed to do this for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is all thanks to the energy of a CME travelling through space which, understandably, causes intense radio waves, which the radio telescope was able to detect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-394915\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-394915\" src=\"https:\/\/twistedsifter.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load-0.7\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" alt=\"The Northern Lights in the sky above mountains\" width=\"800\" height=\"158\" title=\"Ground Breaking New Technology Allows Scientists To Observe Another Stars Coronal Mass Ejection For The First Time Ever\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Northern-Lights-e1760697957317.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-394915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pexels<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the radio telescope and their other measurements, the researchers were able to determine that the CME was moving at 2,400 kilometers per second, much faster than the majority of the Sun\u2019s CMEs.<\/p>\n<p>And given the danger that this would present to life on other planets, that could effectively be razed by the CME, this understanding of space weather is going to be fundamental as we continue to explore possible other habitable planets. As this goes on, this kind of technology could be at the forefront, as the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC)\u2019s Henrik Eklund continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re no longer limited to extrapolating our understanding of the Sun\u2019s CMEs to other stars. It seems that intense space weather may be even more extreme around smaller stars \u2013 the primary hosts of potentially habitable exoplanets. This has important implications for how these planets keep hold of their atmospheres and possibly remain habitable over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is vital information as we work to understand where in life we could live, and where other life could exist.
