{"id":43804,"date":"2025-08-04T04:42:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T04:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/43804\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T04:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T04:42:09","slug":"canadian-ministers-to-discuss-trade-with-mexicos-sheinbaum-the-globe-and-mail-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/43804\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian ministers to discuss trade with Mexico&#8217;s Sheinbaum, The Globe and Mail reports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">(Reuters) -Canadian government ministers are set to engage in discussions on trade with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and other government officials, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Canada&#8217;s Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand are heading to Mexico City for two days of talks beginning on Tuesday, the report said, citing sources familiar with the planning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The potential discussions come days after both Canada and Mexico failed to reach trade agreements with the United States by an August 1 deadline set by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:President Donald Trump;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/issues\/tariffs\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:tariffs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> on Canadian goods to 35% from 25% on all products not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The White House cited what it said was Canada&#8217;s failure to stop fentanyl smuggling and a failure to address U.S. concerns about trade barriers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">By contrast, Mexico secured a temporary reprieve. Sheinbaum secured a pause on new tariffs coming into effect and a 90-day period to work on a trade deal in a call with Trump. The agreement avoids the 30% tariffs that had been set to come into force on Friday deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The pause safeguards the USMCA and means goods compliant with the pact will continue to be exempt from the 25% tariffs Trump imposed earlier this year due to the fentanyl crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Reuters could not immediately verify the report.
