The <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/762610\/2026-tesla-model-s-model-x-specs-features-price\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22762610%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222026-tesla-model-s-model-x-specs-features-price%22%7D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Model S sedan<\/a> and Model X SUV will be discontinued next quarter, CEO Elon Musk said on the company&#8217;s earnings call on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla plans to convert the space at its Fremont, California, factory where the Model S and Model X are built into a facility to produce Optimus humanoid robots instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we&#8217;re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk said it was a &#8220;sad&#8221; moment, but said it&#8217;s part of the company&#8217;s transition into an autonomy and robotics firm. The luxury four-door launched in 2012 as Tesla&#8217;s first mass-produced vehicle after the Roadster, which was more of a limited-run proof of concept. It <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/press-release\/tesla-model-s-wins-one-automotive-industrys-highest-honors-motor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">won numerous accolades<\/a> and helped put long-range electric cars on the map as desirable, real options.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla followed that up with the Model X, a three-row SUV with flashy gull-wing doors, in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/16x9-tr.png\" alt=\"2026 Tesla Model X\" width=\"16\" height=\"9\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Tesla Model X launched in 2015 with gull-wing doors.<\/p>\n<p>Photo by: Tesla<\/p>\n<p>The move to discontinue both vehicles doesn&#8217;t come as a huge surprise, and not only because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/features\/775855\/ev-canceled-delayed-us-2025\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22775855%22%2C%22section%22%3A%223%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22ev-canceled-delayed-us-2025%22%7D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raft of model cancellations<\/a> we&#8217;re seeing across the EV landscape as the U.S. market hits a rough patch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pricey Model S and Model X have made up a dwindling portion of Tesla&#8217;s sales globally in recent years. Since the Cybertruck launched, they were lumped in with it in Tesla&#8217;s delivery announcements in a <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/702934\/tesla-model-s-other-vehicles\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22702934%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-model-s-other-vehicles%22%7D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">category labeled &#8220;Other models.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 They were already dead in a few markets.<\/p>\n<p>The mass-market Model 3 and Model Y are Tesla&#8217;s bread and butter, responsible for a combined <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/press-release\/tesla-fourth-quarter-2025-production-deliveries-deployments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.6 million deliveries in 2025<\/a>. Sales of &#8220;other models,&#8221; by comparison, only totaled 50,850.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla does plan to fill the gap with new vehicles, albeit some that have been promised for years.
