{"id":440336,"date":"2026-01-29T07:15:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T07:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/440336\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T07:15:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T07:15:11","slug":"hootsuite-ceo-says-what-we-are-watching-unfold-right-now-is-wrong-while-defending-ice-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/440336\/","title":{"rendered":"Hootsuite CEO says \u2018what we are watching unfold right now is wrong\u2019 while defending ICE contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/NYV7J34OFNGDRPHN4YBX43RBD4.jpg?auth=6ec36894bdaa3c88493448f4dc235c580b7c46a2c6d43e28b0e9885ec6f17e8b&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">ICE agents patrol a neighborhood in Minneapolis on Wednesday.OCTAVIO JONES\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Hootsuite Inc. chief executive officer Irina Novoselsky acknowledged the harm caused by the tactics of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a letter to employees Wednesday but again defended the Vancouver tech company\u2019s business relationship with the agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhat we are watching unfold right now is wrong,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe loss of life and the fear being felt in communities as a result of recent enforcement actions are devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Novoselsky, who is based in New York, did not specifically mention the role of ICE or other federal agents in the shooting deaths of Renee Nicole Macklin Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis this month. \u201cBeyond how painful it has been to process the current situation on a personal level, we have also felt the concern expressed about Hootsuite\u2019s work with ICE\u2019s public affairs office,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-hootsuite-canada-vancouver-ice-social-media-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver social-media company Hootsuite looking to work with ICE to \u2018build trust\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The letter is posted to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hootsuite.com\/letter-from-irina\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hootsuite.com\/letter-from-irina\">publicly available Hootsuite website<\/a>, but the company does not appear to be linking to the page or distributing the letter externally. Ms. Novoselsky has not responded to numerous requests for comment nor had she previously addressed the company\u2019s contract with ICE publicly. Hootsuite spokeswoman Catherine Kee said in an e-mail Wednesday that \u201cwe don\u2019t have anything further to add\u201d beyond the contents of the letter, which \u201creflects Hootsuite\u2019s position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">News of the extent of Hootsuite\u2019s business with ICE and sister federal agency U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-hootsuite-canada-vancouver-ice-social-media-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported last week<\/a> in The Globe and Mail, including a US$95,000 pilot project secured with ICE in September. U.S. government contractor Seneca Strategic Partners in New York State also has a US$2.8-million contract with the Department of Homeland Security, which both ICE and the CBP fall under, to use Hootsuite for social-media management. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Those engagements have led to public criticism of the company. A group called Democracy Rising has planned a protest in front of Hootsuite\u2019s headquarters in Vancouver this Friday to press the company to cancel its ICE contract \u201cand publicly apologize.\u201d Civil-society non-profit OpenMedia has also organized a campaign to press Hootsuite to drop its work with ICE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-hootsuite-ceo-says-ice-contract-will-stand-as-long-as-agency-honours\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hootsuite CEO says ICE contract will stand as long as agency honours terms and conditions<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In recent messages on the company\u2019s internal Slack channels viewed by The Globe, Hootsuite employees discussed removing or downplaying references to specific customers on its website. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">One employee wrote on Slack that people have been tagging Hootsuite customers on social media, and asked whether Hootsuite should remove the case-studies section from its website, which features client success stories. Another asked whether Hootsuite could control content surfaced by Google searches that relates to Hootsuite\u2019s case studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A number of high-profile American CEOs have issued memos to employees recently about the federal government\u2019s aggressive immigration crackdown. Apple CEO Tim Cook called for \u201cde-escalation\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-28\/apple-s-cook-calls-for-deescalation-after-latest-ice-shooting\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-28\/apple-s-cook-calls-for-deescalation-after-latest-ice-shooting\">in a letter to employees Wednesday<\/a> while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote that \u201cwhat\u2019s happening with ICE is going too far\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/27\/business\/dealbook\/altman-openai-minnesota.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/27\/business\/dealbook\/altman-openai-minnesota.html\">his own internal memo.<\/a> Dozens of CEOS of Minnesota-based companies, including Target and Best Buy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/dozens-of-minnesota-ceos-issue-joint-letter-urging-de-escalation-in-state-after-shooting\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/dozens-of-minnesota-ceos-issue-joint-letter-urging-de-escalation-in-state-after-shooting\">wrote an open letter<\/a> calling on \u201cstate, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/commentary\/article-hootsuite-abandoning-canadian-values-ice-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opinion: Shame on Hootsuite for abandoning Canadian values in taking ICE contract<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In her letter Wednesday, Ms. Novoselsky said she wanted to share her thoughts \u201ccandidly, human to human.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-hootsuite-ceo-says-ice-contract-will-stand-as-long-as-agency-honours\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As she did on an all-hands call with employees last week<\/a>, she held firm to the company\u2019s decision to maintain its contract with ICE. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked with government organizations across countries and administrations for more than 15 years, including the U.S. government,\u201d she wrote. \u201cOur use-case with ICE does not include tracking or surveillance of individuals using our tools.
