{"id":440954,"date":"2026-01-29T14:01:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/440954\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T14:01:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:01:09","slug":"government-planning-to-modernize-existing-st-clares-after-scrapping-plans-for-new-hospital-at-kenmount-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/440954\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Planning to Modernize Existing St. Clare\u2019s After Scrapping Plans for New Hospital at Kenmount Crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/petten-gov.jpg\" class=\"header-image\" alt=\"Government Planning to Modernize Existing St. Clare's After Scrapping Plans for New Hospital at Kenmount Crossing\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">(VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>The province says the cost of building a new hospital complex at Kenmount Crossing is just too high to justify at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten says the project, at an estimated cost of $10 billion, had to be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/premier-andrew-furey-st-clares-hospital-replacement-site.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255168\" class=\"size-full wp-image-255168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/premier-andrew-furey-st-clares-hospital-replacement-site.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-255168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Then-premier Andrew Furey at the site of the new acute care hospital in Kenmount Crossing in November 2024 (VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>The former Liberal government announced plans in late 2024 to build a new acute care campus where St. John\u2019s, Mount Pearl and Paradise meet to replace St. Clare\u2019s in the city\u2019s downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Barry Petten says with the province staring down a billion dollar deficit, he just couldn\u2019t justify building the new facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could never find any information on any planning for our hospital other than the fact that he went into St. Clare\u2019s one day and announced the hospital,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at a loss when I was sworn in and I\u2019m sure our premier, if he was here, would agree 100 per cent that we were totally dismayed that this building was proposed with zero dollars attached at an atrocious cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/st-clares-mercy-hospital-st-johns-health-care-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191705 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/st-clares-mercy-hospital-st-johns-health-care-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Petten says government plans to modernize the existing St. Clare\u2019s Hospital instead.<\/p>\n<p>Government is also scrapping the previous administration\u2019s plans for a mid-sized theatre for St. John\u2019s and a sports and wellness dome.
