{"id":441167,"date":"2026-01-29T16:27:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/441167\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T16:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:27:12","slug":"scientists-to-drill-into-antarcticas-fragile-doomsday-glacier-that-poses-threat-to-worlds-oceans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/441167\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists to drill into Antarctica\u2019s fragile \u2018Doomsday Glacier\u2019 that poses threat to world\u2019s oceans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scientists;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Scientists <\/a>are preparing to drill 1m deep into <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/doomsday-glacier-won-t-collapse-190530478.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Antarctica\u2019s \u201cDoomsday Glacier\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica\u2019s \u201cDoomsday Glacier\u201d<\/a> in a bid to understand the \u201cunderwater tsunamis\u201d, which could have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/thwaites-glacier-great-britain-florida-experts-british-antarctic-survey-b2615955.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:severe consequences for the climate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">severe consequences for the climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The collapse of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/thwaites-glacier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Thwaites Glacier,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Thwaites Glacier,<\/a> a huge mass of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ice;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ice<\/a> up to 2,000 metres thick that covers an area nearly as large as the United Kingdom, would lead global sea levels to rise by 65cm, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists will now drill into one of the most difficult to access and least-understood areas of the glacier in order to directly observe the processes that cause warm ocean water to melt the ice above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Peter Davis, a physical oceanographer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/british-antarctic-survey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:British Antarctic Survey (BAS);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">British Antarctic Survey (BAS)<\/a>, said the project is an \u201cextremely challenging mission\u201d taking place on \u201cone of the most important and unstable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/glaciers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:glaciers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">glaciers<\/a> on the planet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Scientists will drill 1000m deep into the glacier (British Antarctic Survey)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/b0f530f6bbe1d3e94b2ed0b328a6b973.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scientists will drill 1000m deep into the glacier (British Antarctic Survey)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Over the next two weeks, a team from the BAS and the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) will use a hot water drill to bore through the ice before sending down instruments which will send data back to the researchers above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The researchers will be looking into \u201cunderwater tsunamis\u201d, which can span from 10 to hundreds of metres, researchers told Sky News Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese big underwater waves, with amplitudes of 10s to possibly hundreds of meters, what that can do is mix deep water with water closer to the surface.
