Iqaluit city council unanimously voted Tuesday to raise Greenland\u2019s flag in response to the United States\u2019 threats against \u201cour family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland belongs to Greenland,\u201d said Mayor Solomon Awa, who made the proposal during this week\u2019s regular council meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to show support in these increasingly challenging times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of approximately 56,000 people, the vast majority of whom are Inuit.<\/p>\n

Council\u2019s decision comes a week after Greenland\u2019s red and white flag was raised<\/a> in front of Nunavut\u2019s legislative assembly building, following days of threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to gain control of the self-governing territory.<\/p>\n

Trump called the island a \u201cpiece of ice\u201d the United States needs to own for national security and to prevent Russia or China from controlling it.<\/p>\n

Initially, he said the takeover would happen \u201cone way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later backed down<\/a>, saying he won\u2019t use force to get the island. Then he backed further away, saying a \u201cframework\u201d of a deal had been reached on Greenland, without offering further details.<\/p>\n

While that was happening, thousands of people across the world \u2014 including approximately 100 Iqalummiut<\/a> \u2014 took to the streets to show solidarity with Greenland.<\/p>\n

In an interview after the council meeting, Awa said Greenland is part of one big Inuit family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our hunting ground. This is where we grew up. And this is where we\u2019re going to be for the generations to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The U.S. threat to take over or purchase Greenland, he added, resembles a Western urge to \u201cbuild a fence and say, \u2018This is my cow now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, there are no cows here. We have caribous,\u201d Awa said.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ll never understand each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
