Sir David Suchet<\/a> has spoken about his young grandson\u2019s \u201cvery rare\u201d and \u201cincurable\u201d condition, saying that he is \u201ccampaigning to raise awareness\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 79-year-old actor, best known for playing detective Hercule Poirot<\/a> in Agatha Christie’s Poirot<\/a>, has two adult children with his wife (actor Sheila Ferris), and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Daily Mail<\/a>, Suchet and his family were interviewed about his 11-year-old grandson\u2019s rare condition, known as Tuberous Sclerosis.<\/p>\n

According to the NHS, Tuberous Sclerosis is a condition that causes mostly benign tumours to develop in different parts of the body. It is present from birth, and can cause mild to severe health problems, including epilepsy, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, kidney issues, breathing difficulties, and hydrocephalus, or a build-up of fluid on the brain.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a shock. Our darling grandson has Tuberous Sclerosis, a very rare incurable disease (in this case caused by a non inherited) gene mutation,\u201d Suchet told the publication.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is now 11, but he is non-verbal. He can walk, with a very particular gait. But he is a beautiful child.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking about his grandson\u2019s condition, the actor explained: \u201cI learned it was incurable, it was hard to take in, not many people have heard of it. So I’m now campaigning to raise awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suchet added that he and his family are \u201cvery close\u201d, and that he rents a property in Wiltshire, near where his son\u2019s family lives, so that he and Ferris can \u201cbe on hand\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can’t cure or halt it what my grandson endures, you just have to get on with it,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Suchet, a prolific and celebrated stage actor whose role in the Agatha Christie TV adaptation propelled him to national stardom, was knighted in 2020 for his services to drama and charity.<\/p>\n

At the time, the actor told PA news agency that it was the \u201cproudest moment\u201d of his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been knighted on stage and it doesn\u2019t compare,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd no camera is going to say \u2018Cut, let\u2019s do a retake\u2019.<\/p>\n

Asked what he was most proud of, Suchet responded: \u201cI think it has to be Poirot for the general public.<\/p>\n
