{"id":444148,"date":"2026-01-31T01:14:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/444148\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T01:14:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:14:07","slug":"10-african-countries-with-the-highest-chinese-loans-in-the-last-24-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/444148\/","title":{"rendered":"10 African countries with the highest Chinese loans in the last 24 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n        This represents a dramatic decline from the highs of the early 2010s, when <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/chinese-construction-firm-to-deliver-nigerias-first-7-megawatt-floating-solar-power\/n5x6sht\" id=\"b4232b94-c95a-4712-b69b-b3bf06f87e09\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chinese credit<\/a> routinely exceeded $10 billion every year.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        From 2000 to 2024, 42 Chinese lenders inked 1,319 loans totaling $180.87 billion with 49 African states and seven regional entities.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        These loans sponsored nearly 900 projects worth $316 billion in sectors such as transportation, power, water and sanitation, and digital infrastructure, making a significant contribution to economic growth, public assets, and poverty reduction.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Lending has remained focused on transportation, energy transmission, water and sanitation, and financial services, all of which are struggling to attract private investment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Meanwhile, fossil fuel projects, electricity-generating, and ICT projects received almost no fresh loans in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Renewable energy projects are increasingly being funded through foreign direct investment (FDI) or trade methods, rather than traditional sovereign debt.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        In Kenya, all infrastructure loans in 2024 were denominated in RMB, a shift from the USD-dominated borrowing that characterized the 2010s.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        These movements have a broader economic impact.
