{"id":444531,"date":"2026-01-31T05:33:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T05:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/444531\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T05:33:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T05:33:12","slug":"canadian-military-member-has-died-while-deployed-in-latvia-ottawa-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/444531\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian military member has died while deployed in Latvia, Ottawa says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>A Canadian Armed Forces member who was deployed with the military\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/nato\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO<\/a> mission in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/latvia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Latvia<\/a> has died, the Department of National Defence said Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, a Hamilton, Ont., native, died Thursday near Riga, Latvia, the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gunner Halmagean\u2019s death by the Latvian Military Police with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/canadian-forces\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Forces<\/a> Military Police is ongoing,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Halmagean was deployed on Operation Reassurance, the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade that helps defend the alliance\u2019s eastern European flank.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first overseas mission in Halmagean\u2019s nearly three years of service, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He was posted to the 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support), Royal Canadian Artillery, part of 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, which is based at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passing of Gunner Halmagean is a loss deeply felt for the Canadian Armed Forces,\u201d Canada\u2019s chief of the defence staff Gen.
