Dozens of Northern Nevada cyclists gathered on Saturday for a ride in memory of Alex Pretti.<\/p>\n
Pretti was shot and killed by federal agents on January 24.<\/p>\n
The organizer said the ride is a fitting tribute, since Pretti was a backpacker and cyclist.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t know him, but I’ve seen information about him that he liked to do a lot of bikepacking, riding, off-roading and commuting,” said Amber Hoadley.<\/p>\n
The Reno ride is one of over 200 nationwide. It started shortly after noon at Mayberry Park, then followed Mayberry Drive for a few miles before ending at the Believe Plaza in Downtown Reno.<\/p>\n
Some riders expressed their thoughts with upside-down American flags. Others displayed signs supporting Pretti or criticizing ICE.<\/p>\n
“They are just a rogue state at this point,” said Kelcie Kraft, speaking of ICE. “There’s no checks on their powers or not. They’re not being prosecuted when they break the law or murder people in cold blood.”<\/p>\n
Another rider said she has a personal connection to the shootings in Minnesota.<\/p>\n
“I have friends in Minneapolis, and they say it is horrible right now. It’s very scary,” said Lori Patch.<\/p>\n
On the other side, one Reno neighbor says he doesn’t understand why folks in the biggest little city are protesting what’s going on in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n
“There really is a lot of stuff going on around on the whole nation, but these protests are basically stuff that’s happening in Minnesota,” said Derrick Schryer. “I don’t know how much that’s affecting us here in Reno.”<\/p>\n
The Nevada Bicycle Coalition helped organize the Pretti ride. Its president Ky Plaskon said the event sends an important message.<\/p>\n
“It’s community, and paying attention to what’s happening to our neighbors, regardless of where they’re from,” Plaskon said. “Stand up for them. Protect them. And people shouldn’t be shot in the back.”<\/p>\n
The ride was one of multiple ICE-related events in Reno on Saturday, along with a protest on the Virginia Street Bridge in downtown.<\/p>\n
