First Canada, now Europe. Not a bad start to the year for Tiago Coimbra.<\/p>\n

Swedish top-flight side IFK G\u00f6teborg have announced<\/a> the signing of the 22-year-old forward from the Canadian Premier League\u2019s Halifax Wanderers, for a reported fee of approximately 2.7 million kronor (CAD $400,000) according to Swedish outlet Expressen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The two-time UEFA Cup winners, the predecessor competition to the modern UEFA Europa League, also confirmed via a press release on Saturday that Coimbra has been signed to a three-and-a-half year, lasting through to June 2029.<\/p>\n

Coimbra is coming off a strong season in Nova Scotia, scoring 13 goals and adding three assists in 23 appearances for the Halifax Wanderers. He was named the CPL\u2019s Best Canadian U-21 Player of the Year and was also nominated for the Players\u2019 Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n

In January, Coimbra was called up to the Canadian men\u2019s national team for the January camp<\/a> in California, and made his international debut in the 1-0 B-friendly victory over Guatemala<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coimbra drew interest from multiple clubs in North America and Europe and spent time on trial with MLS side Houston Dynamo following the conclusion of the 2025 season. As per HFX Football Post\u2019s Josh Healey<\/a>, the Vancouver Whitecaps were among those that made an offer to Halifax for the striker.<\/p>\n

Coimbra made 64 appearances across three seasons with the Nova Scotia outfit, scoring 20 goals and adding five assists.<\/p>\n

He joined the club in December 2022 on a two-year contract with a club option for 2025. After the 2024 season, he signed a new deal through the 2026 Canadian Premier League campaign, with additional club options for 2027 and 2028.<\/p>\n

With the move finalized, Halifax are expected to turn their attention to finding a new striker. The Wanderers made headlines last month by signing CPL star goalkeeper Marco Carducci, before adding defender Finn Linder and midfielders Lucas Olguin and Miguel Arilla. They have also seen key departures, including Sean Rea to expansion side FC Supra du Quebec and Rayane Yesli, who moved to Algeria\u2019s top division.<\/p>\n

Halifax\u2019s season, and the Vanni Sartini era in Nova Scotia, begins in April as the club enters the CPL\u2019s eighth season with HFX in search of a first CPL title.
