As a seasoned portrait photographer, stepping into the world of 14mm shooting was new territory, but it also served as a great opportunity to put the Viltrox AF 14mm f\/4.0 Air Z<\/a> through its paces. This ultra-wide prime autofocus lens encouraged me to see new places and familiar faces with fresh eyes, revealing perspectives and compositions I wouldn\u2019t normally explore.<\/p>\n

Viltrox is widely known for sharp lenses at more affordable prices, so when this wide angle prime became available, I was keen to try it out as part of a professional development exercise. As photographers, it\u2019s vital to step outside of your comfort zone every now and then to keep your skill set sharp. I have recently committed to broadening my horizons photographically, and I am taking that very literally by shooting with a 14mm prime lens.<\/p>\n

Portraiture<\/p>\n

As a photographer with a background steeped in portraiture, I had to give the Viltrox 14mm Air lens a try with some environmental portraits, so I took a spontaneous walk with my daughter to a local pedestrian tunnel for some gritty portraits. Paired with a speedlight to really emphasize contrast and a heavy vignetting effect, I\u2019m pleased with how these spur-of-the-moment portraits turned out.<\/p>\n

Concert Photography<\/p>\n

My go-to focal length for shooting concerts from the front of the stage would usually be between 35mm and 50mm, and while I would normally shoot concerts at wider apertures, the 14mm focal length and higher-than-I-would-otherwise-go ISO handled the scenario absolutely fine. I got some intense shots from the front of the stage. The lens is great for getting up close and personal, but it would also deliver from the back of the room, taking in environmental shots when the scale of the venue and crowd allowed for that scenario.<\/p>\n

Even though I don\u2019t typically shoot at such a wide focal length, this lens opened up new ways of working and made me excited to explore scenes in different ways. I planned days out around this lens, and that is a method of inspiration that has been missing from my practice for a long time.<\/p>\n

Despite its modest f\/4.0 aperture, this lens felt surprisingly capable throughout my testing, proving itself as a versatile tool. Although the wide focal length is outside of my standard use, the 14mm Air Z quickly became something I wanted to take everywhere simply because of how fun and refreshing it was to use. When a piece of equipment sparks new inspiration, that can only be a good sign.<\/p>\n

It is not the fastest ultra-wide lens on the market, but for everyday shooting, it\u2019s very capable.
