{"id":448937,"date":"2026-02-02T10:13:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T10:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/448937\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T10:13:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T10:13:14","slug":"brain-cooling-collar-trial-for-head-injury-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/448937\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain cooling collar trial for head injury patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A new study will assess whether a targeted cooling collar can improve patients&#8217; recovery from traumatic brain injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke&#8217;s Hospital, said it would be the &#8220;world&#8217;s first in-human study&#8221; to measure the &#8220;pioneering medical device&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Various methods of &#8220;brain cooling&#8221; &#8211; or induced hypothermia &#8211; can be used to limit swelling in the brain when someone suffers a stroke or head injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, if cooling affects the whole body it can cause &#8220;systemic side effects&#8221; that &#8220;complicate recovery&#8221;, the trust said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The cooling collar, named CB240 Aurora, is applied around the neck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is a &#8220;selective temperature-control device&#8221; that aims to lower brain temperature in a more targeted way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The system is portable and could therefore be used outside hospital settings such as roadsides or sporting events.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A close up of a male patient who is lying on his back on a hospital bed, wearing the collar. The patient has a beard and his lips are parted, but you can't see the rest of his face.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/9ac01f99527cd811a6626409fce84664.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Addenbrooke&#8217;s Hospital plans to enrol 20 brain injury patients this year to test the brain cooling collar [CUH NHS Foundation Trust]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The CB240 Aurora is designed to minimise systemic side-effects associated with conventional whole-body cooling strategies such as body-surface or intravascular cooling devices,&#8221; the trust said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;These systemic effects may include immune suppression and chest infections, reported to complicate recovery and offset potential benefits of therapeutic temperature control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The trial will get under way this month at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuh.nhs.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Addenbrooke&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Addenbrooke&#8217;s<\/a> under the Neurosciences and Trauma Critical Care teams. The hospital specialises in the treatment of brain injuries and tumours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Twenty patients with severe traumatic brain injury are expected to be enrolled over 12 months in the study, named SELETHERM 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Half will be randomised to receive selective brain cooling with the collar for the first 72 hours, while the remainder will receive standard current therapies.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Dr Lavinio smiles at the camera while standing in a corridor.
