Sydney Sweeney is shutting down speculation about her political beliefs, telling Cosmopolitan<\/a> in a new interview that she\u2019s \u201calways been here to make art.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Euphoria star found herself the centre of a political firestorm last summer when she appeared in an ad for American Eagle that led some people on social media to accuse the actress of promoting racial superiority.<\/p>\n

In one of the American Eagle spots, Sweeney, 28, said, \u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring,\u201d then turned to the camera and adds, \u201cMy jeans are blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Print ads showed the denim-clad actress alongside the slogan, \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the controversy unfolded, American Eagle defended itself, saying, \u201c\u2018Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u2019 is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We\u2019ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance fired back at critics for trying to ignite a \u201cwoke\u201d political debate<\/a> around the ad.<\/p>\n

\u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there. It\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u2018flying off the shelves.\u2019 Go get \u2018em Sydney,\u201d Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n

But in her new interview with Cosmo<\/a>, Sweeney clapped back at commentators who have been quick to make judgments about her political leanings and label her as a \u201cMAGA Barbie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been here to talk about politics. I\u2019ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of,\u201d Sweeney told the outlet. \u201cAnd I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it\u2019s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can\u2019t control that.\u201d<\/p>\n

What are Sydney Sweeney\u2019s political beliefs?<\/p>\n

When asked why she won\u2019t address her political stance, Sweeney she hadn\u2019t \u201cfigured it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a hateful person. If I say, \u2018That\u2019s not true,\u2019 they\u2019ll come at me like, \u2018You\u2019re just saying that to look better.\u2019 There\u2019s no winning,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s never any winning. I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can\u2019t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney went on to say that it\u2019s unlikely she\u2019ll ever be the kind of Hollywood star that feels a need to share their political opinions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she said when asked if her fans will ever get to hear what she thinks politically. \u201cI\u2019m not a political person. I\u2019m in the arts. I\u2019m not here to speak on politics. That\u2019s not an area I\u2019ve ever even imagined getting into. It\u2019s not why I became who I am. I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don\u2019t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

One battle after another for Sweeney<\/p>\n

Sweeney previously addressed the uproar in an interview with GQ<\/a>, saying that it was \u201csurreal\u201d to hear Trump getting involved in the fallout.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn\u2019t affect me one way or the other,\u201d Sweeney said of the turmoil. \u201cI\u2019ve always believed that I\u2019m not here to tell people what to think \u2026 when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.\u201d<\/p>\n
