{"id":45003,"date":"2025-08-04T16:53:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T16:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/45003\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T16:53:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T16:53:08","slug":"the-whos-roger-daltrey-calls-zak-starkey-comments-upsetting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/45003\/","title":{"rendered":"The Who&#8217;s Roger Daltrey Calls Zak Starkey Comments &#8216;Upsetting&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-who\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-who\" data-tag=\"the-who\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Who<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/roger-daltrey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_roger-daltrey\" data-tag=\"roger-daltrey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Daltrey<\/a> said the comments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/zak-starkey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_zak-starkey\" data-tag=\"zak-starkey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zak Starkey<\/a> made about him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zak-starkey-retired-not-fired-the-who-1235348310\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following his<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/pete-townshend-the-who-split-zak-starkey-mess-1235369622\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tumultuous ouster<\/a> from the band were \u201cincredibly upsetting.\u201d The singer also offered a slightly new version of the events that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zak-starkey-firing-from-the-who-1235319105\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led to the drummer\u2019s exit<\/a> in a recent interview with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/music\/article\/roger-daltrey-interview-who-tour-dreamland-margate-amerant-bank-arena-florida-kzrv3pgzm\">The Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tStarkey (who is Ringo Starr\u2019s son) spent nearly 30 years drumming for the Who, up until this spring when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-who-parts-ways-zak-starkey-1235318856\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zak-starkey-back-the-who-pete-townshend-1235321402\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">re-hired<\/a>, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-who-part-ways-drummer-zak-starkey-again-farewell-tour-1235342140\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired for good<\/a>. The turmoil dates back to a somewhat sloppy performance at a charity show at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDaltrey has accused Starkey of playing too loudly and making mistakes. Meanwhile, Starkey has claimed it was Daltrey who made the mistakes, like supposedly missing his intro on a performance of \u201cThe Song Is Over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNeither side of the fight has held back in the press since then. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/zak-starkey-interview-fired-by-the-who-1235364330\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starkey told Rolling Stone<\/a> that Daltrey \u201cjust got lost,\u201d while in an interview with The Telegraph, he said, \u201cWhat happened was I got it right and Roger got it wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tResponding to Starkey in The Times, Daltrey said, \u201cIt was kind of a character assassination and it was incredibly upsetting.\u201d He added that Starkey\u2019s response to everything \u201cwas crippling to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to Daltrey, the main issue at the Royal Albert Hall show was actually a technical one. During live shows, the Who use electronic drums so Daltrey can hear them in his in-ear monitors, with Daltrey explaining: \u201cIt is controlled by a guy on the side, and we had so much sub-bass on the sound of the drums that I couldn\u2019t pitch. I was pointing to the bass drum and screaming at him because it was like flying a plane without seeing the horizon. So when Zak thought I was having a go at him, I wasn\u2019t. That\u2019s all that happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe added of public perception of the \u201cThe Song Is Over\u201d incident, which was captured on video and shared widely online, \u201cAn audience can see what\u2019s happening on stage and have a complete misunderstanding of what\u2019s actually going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut while a mishap over sound levels might seem like something all parties would be able to address and overcome, Daltrey remained firm in the Who\u2019s decision to ultimately out Starkey. \u201cPete [Townshend] and I retain the right to be the Who,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone else is a session player. You can\u2019t replace [original drummer] Keith Moon.
