{"id":450428,"date":"2026-02-03T04:05:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T04:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/450428\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T04:05:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T04:05:07","slug":"little-movement-at-wnba-bargaining-meeting-league-expects-to-respond-to-union-proposal-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/450428\/","title":{"rendered":"Little movement at WNBA bargaining meeting; league expects to respond to union proposal soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/wnba-and-union-to-meet-in-full-on-monday-as-tension-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/wnba-and-union-to-meet-in-full-on-monday-as-tension-rises\/\">WNBA\u2019s collective bargaining session in New York<\/a> ended Monday with league assurances that it will respond in the coming days to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/23\/sources-wnba-still-hasnt-responded-to-union-proposal-as-talks-remain-stagnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/23\/sources-wnba-still-hasnt-responded-to-union-proposal-as-talks-remain-stagnant\/\">union\u2019s now five-week-old request<\/a> for a 30% revenue-share split, sources told SBJ. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">But while there were new faces in the room \u2014 such as former player-turned-Seattle Storm co-owner Sue Bird and Phoenix Mercury owner Mat Ishbia via Zoom \u2014 and a spirited plea to retain league-funded player housing, consensus was the two sides moved no closer to an agreement during the critical three-hour meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/21\/wnba-releases-2026-schedule-amid-cba-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/21\/wnba-releases-2026-schedule-amid-cba-talks\/\">season opener now 97 days away<\/a>, sources said the league explained to the WNBPA on Monday why it had not immediately answered the union\u2019s request in December for a 30% revenue share and $10M-plus salary cap \u2014 purportedly because the WNBA (which has already proposed a max 2026 salary of over $1.3M and an average salary of $530,000) believed the union offer was not disparate from previous ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">But while numbers related to revenues and costs were eventually discussed Monday &#8211;with productive dialogue that sources considered \u201cvery helpful\u201d &#8212; there were no proposals or counterproposals presented at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">Instead, the active players who were present \u2014 Nneka Ogwumike, Brianna Turner, Alysha Clark and Stefanie Dolson in person and over 40 players through Zoom \u2014 reaffirmed their preference to retain the leaguewide housing benefit (where teams pay for residences or provide a stipend) and reiterated a request for improved facilities and \u201cminimum standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">Two players who had planned to attend, Kelsey Plum and Napheesa Collier, were unable to arrive from Miami (where they were playing for Unrivaled) due to travel complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">As for the league, the other new faces at the table \u2014 besides Bird and Ishbia \u2014 were Liberty governor Clara Wu Tsai, Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder and Connecticut Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti. Sources said the one of the main priorities of the meeting, in fact, was to connect the owners in person with the players, presumably to reverse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/wnba-and-union-to-meet-in-full-on-monday-as-tension-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/wnba-and-union-to-meet-in-full-on-monday-as-tension-rises\/\">recent acrimony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-labor-and-agents \">Bird\u2019s appearance particularly struck the union as ironic considering she was part of negotiations six years ago as a player.
