The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy<\/a> hits the halfway mark of its first season this week. We have details and new images for the fifth episode. This episode also has been teased to have a deep connection to Trek lore, and we have some commentary from the writers and showrunners about [SPOILERS].<\/p>\n

\u201cSeries Acclimation Mil\u201d<\/p>\n

Episode 5 of season 1 of Starfleet Academy is titled \u201cSeries Acclimation Mil,\u201d which is the full name of the photonic character \u201cSAM\u201d (Kerrice Brooks). The episode was written by Kirsten Beyer and Tawny Newsome, and directed by Larry Teng. SFA 105 debuts on Paramount+<\/a> on Thursday, February 5.<\/p>\n

Synopsis<\/p>\n

As a cadet sets out to solve an ancient Starfleet mystery, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and learns the value of forging her own path. Meanwhile, Nahla agrees to help a fellow chancellor with an elaborate alien ritual.<\/p>\n

The DS9 connection<\/p>\n

Speaking to TrekMovie at the press junket<\/a>, both Starfleet Academy showrunners teased how this episode connects to Trek canon. Noga Landau said \u201cepisode 5 is essentially a love letter to\u00a0Deep Space Nine,\u201d along with hyping \u201cIt\u2019s so good.\u201d Executive producer Alex Kurtzman added \u201cWell, that\u2019s the point, right? The idea is that if you don\u2019t know\u00a0Deep Space Nine\u00a0and you\u2019ve never seen it, it\u2019s a wonderful introduction. If you do know\u00a0Deep Space Nine, it\u2019s really meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n

This connection to DS9 should be no surprise as co-writer (and the voice of Mariner on Lower Decks) Tawny Newsome has often spoken about how favorite Star Trek show is Deep Space Nine. And at STLV last summer<\/a>, she talked about writing for Academy, saying \u201cIt was very cool to get to use my evil powers of being insane about Star Trek in a different way.\u201d\u00a0 Regarding co-writing this episode, Newsome teased how it will deal with the lore, as she worked closely with Kirsten Beyer:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was such a dream, because I could just text her in the middle of the night and ask her just deep cut, nerdy questions that I won\u2019t allude to right now, because it\u2019ll spoil things.\u201d<\/p>\n

TrekMovie also talked to Kirsten Beyer<\/a> about her collaboration with Newsome for this episode, and she revealed:<\/p>\n

\u201c[Tawny] goes deep in areas [of canon] where I\u2019m less familiar or less off-the-top-of-my-head familiar. And she is also very passionate about the ideas that she believes in and the things she wants to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n
