{"id":45098,"date":"2025-08-04T17:44:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T17:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/45098\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T17:44:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T17:44:09","slug":"chris-stuckmanns-halloween-release-for-neon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/45098\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris Stuckmann&#8217;s Halloween Release for Neon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/chris-stuckmann\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chris-stuckmann\" data-tag=\"chris-stuckmann\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Stuckmann<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/shelby-oaks-review-1235028078\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crowd-funded \u201cShelby Oaks\u201d<\/a> is gearing up for its big theatrical release on October 3 \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/neon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_neon\" data-tag=\"neon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neon<\/a>\u2019s got a lot riding on the supernatural mystery delivering its first major Halloween play at the box office. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, IndieWire reported that the YouTuber\u2019s supernatural mystery \u2014 about a team of ghost hunters who lose one of their own \u2014\u00a0had undergone significant reshoots. In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/neon-reshot-shelby-oaks-release-date-1235131778\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cShelby Oaks\u201d spent roughly $1 million to head back to Ohio<\/a> to add scenes with \u201cmore blood and gore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I reviewed the first cut of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/shelby-oaks\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shelby-oaks\" data-tag=\"shelby-oaks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shelby Oaks<\/a>\u201d last summer at Fantasia Fest, I knocked it for Stuckmann\u2019s poorly written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/gallery\/most-iconic-final-girls-horror-laurie-strode-scream-queens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">final girl<\/a> (Camille Sullivan) and suspense with nonsensical execution. (Once again, I ask, why would you look for clues in an abandoned prison in the middle of the night when no clock is ticking? She\u2019s been missing for years!) Still, I gave it a \u201cB-\u201d because I admired how Stuckmann paid for it, and his love for the genre was obvious.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/the-naked-gun-snowman-explained-1235142635\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235142635\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MCDNAGU_PA016.jpg\" alt=\"'The Naked Gun'\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235142637\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/trailers\/ella-mccay-trailer-james-l-brooks-emma-mackey-1235142854\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235142854\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/emc_still_request_250731_1.65.1.jpg\" alt=\"'Ella McCay'\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235142858\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Additional scenes aren\u2019t likely to fix a bad script, but there\u2019s something to be said for pumping in set-pieces that shift the focus away from what a first-time director lacks \u2014\u00a0and toward the promise of what he can do when a studio finances his confidence. Producer Aaron Koontz walked IndieWire through the positives and negatives of pedaling a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> paid for by the internet in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/neon-reshot-shelby-oaks-release-date-1235131778\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extended conversation from June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Neon dropped several cryptic \u201cShelby Oaks\u201d posters showing missing girl Riley (Sarah Durn) in\u2026 I don\u2019t know, black and white? Let\u2019s hope there\u2019s more coming from the \u201cLonglegs\u201d marketing team to support the idea that Stuckmann is an event-worthy filmmaker. Between \u201cTalk to Me\u201d and \u201cBring Her Back,\u201d A24 has done well enough with YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou \u2014\u00a0but internet creators continue to face stigma in Hollywood. Plenty of digital era defenders (me included!) want to see Stuckmann succeed, but the first version of \u201cShelby Oaks\u201d I saw earnestly needed more money and time.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Stuckmann appeared at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2p1ux-jo0bg\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Comic-Con<\/a> to tease the film and underscore the idea that \u201cmovies saved my life.\u201d Known first as a popular critic, the filmmaker drew criticism online several years ago when he said he would no longer give negative feedback to fellow directors.
