The pair will move into their new roles on March 18, the same day Disney holds its annual meeting. D\u2019Amaro will also be named to the company\u2019s board at that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cJosh D\u2019Amaro possesses that rare combination of inspiring leadership and innovation, a keen eye for strategic growth opportunities, and a deep passion for the Disney brand and its people \u2013 all of which make him the right person to take the helm as Disney\u2019s next CEO,\u201d\u00a0said James Gorman, chairman of Disney\u2019s board of directors.\u00a0\u201cThroughout this search process, Josh has demonstrated a strong vision for the company\u2019s future and a deep understanding of the creative spirit that makes Disney unique in an ever-changing marketplace. His ability to combine creativity with operational excellence is exemplary and I am thrilled for Josh and the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIger was CEO of Disney from 2005 until 2020, when Bob Chapek (also a veteran of the theme park division) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/disney-picks-bob-chapek-as-next-ceo-1281130\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was named<\/a> his successor in a move that stunned Wall Street and Hollywood, and seemed to come out of left field. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/inside-disney-decision-to-rehire-iger-1235267844\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tumultuous few years<\/a> however, punctuated by the COVID-19 pandemic, led to Iger\u2019s surprise return in late 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe ascension of D\u2019Amaro bore little resemblance to the Chapek choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tInstead, D\u2019Amaro\u2019s elevation to CEO also ends a years-long (and extremely public) succession bake-off, with D\u2019Amaro, Disney Entertainment co-chair Dana Walden frequently cited as the top internal candidates, and the Disney board, led by former Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman, also exploring if there were any viable external candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBy also elevating Walden, Gorman is taking a cue from his own experience at Morgan Stanley, where he held a public succession bake-off, and promoted the two candidates who ultimately did not get the CEO job, keeping them in the fold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cDana Walden is an excellent leader who commands tremendous respect from the creative community,\u201d\u00a0Iger added.\u00a0\u201cGiven that creativity is at the heart of everything Disney does, she is a wonderful choice to serve in this new leadership role. In the years since Dana joined Disney, she has accumulated great knowledge about the many facets of our businesses and brands, and is very well prepared to be president and chief creative officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDisney says that Walden\u2019s entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman, and ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro, will continue working in their \u201ccritical\u201d roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDisney is an unusual company among the entertainment giants, because it has an experiences division that is a major financial force, and a major complexifier. D\u2019Amaro was also tasked with overseeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-josh-damaro-parks-experiences-1236017394\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a $60 billion expansion <\/a>of that business, including a slew of new attractions based on well-known IP, multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-treasure-disney-cruise-line-expansion-plans-1236094045\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new cruise ships<\/a>, and even a new theme park and resort <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-abu-dhabi-theme-park-resort-yas-island-miral-1236208971\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in Abu Dhabi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe successful leadership of that division likely helped in his effort to succeed Iger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the center of the company, however, is the studio: The content engine that feeds the rest of the company. And while D\u2019Amaro is not a creative by trade, it is an area he made a point to highlight whenever he could.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis goes back to Walt when he envisioned what this company ultimately was going to be,\u201d D\u2019Amaro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-alan-bergman-josh-damaro-interview-tony-stark-ride-disneyland-1236158462\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> last year. \u201cHe had storytelling and content in the middle and all of these businesses surrounding it, such that we could stay with the consumer, wherever they were, literally in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tD\u2019Amaro also made a point of maintaining a close relationships with creatives at the company, something Chapek was not able to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut his elevation will also end the Bob Iger era, with the executive set to serve as an adviser and board member only through the end of the year, when he will officially retire from the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cOn behalf of the entire Board, we extend our deepest gratitude to Bob Iger for his extraordinary leadership and dedication to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/walt-disney-company\/\" id=\"auto-tag_walt-disney-company_1\" data-tag=\"walt-disney-company\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Walt Disney Company<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0added Gorman.\u00a0\u201cThe Board asked Bob to return as CEO in 2022 for two critical reasons.
