Ellen Pompeo recently revealed in a pre-taped message at the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala (via People<\/a>) that she texted Eric Dane immediately after learning her \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d co-star was diagnosed with ALS. Pompeo headlined the ABC medical drama in the title role, while Dane joined the cast in Season 2 in the iconic role of Mark \u201cMcSteamy\u201d Sloan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember when he came in as McSteamy and us having instant electric chemistry, and I immediately just fell in love with him,\u201d Pompeo said of Dane. \u201cAs soon as I heard about his diagnosis, I texted him, and I said, \u2018I\u2019m here if you want to speak.\u2019 And my phone rang 30 seconds later.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the subsequent phone call, Pompeo said she told Dane \u201cwhatever you need, however I can help. I love you.\u201d She added to the gala about her former co-star: \u201cI\u2019m really proud of you. I love you so much and I am honored to get to speak about you today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of Dane\u2019s former \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d cast members have spoken out in support of him since he revealed his ALS diagnosis last year. Patrick Dempsey told Parade<\/a> in January that he\u2019d been texting with Dane.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s been incredibly courageous in the face of this horrible disease,\u201d Dempsey said. \u201cHe\u2019s such a wonderful human being. He has such a great sense of humor, and he\u2019s so intelligent. I\u2019ve always enjoyed working and being around Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking,\u201d Dempsey added. \u201cIt really is. For him and for his family. You feel for them when you see this terrible disease and how quickly it attacks the body. But he\u2019s bringing a lot of light to that, and he\u2019s using his platform in a positive way. I wish him the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane was set to receive<\/a> the Advocate of the Year Award at the January gala. Hours before the event began, organizers said that Dane could not attend \u201cdue to the physical realities of ALS. He\u00a0first revealed his ALS diagnosis<\/a>\u00a0to People in April of 2025. He told the outlet, \u201cI feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of \u2018Euphoria<\/a>\u2019 next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
