Ms. Begum was named on Tuesday as the Liberal candidate in the federal riding of the same name, which was vacated this week by ex-minister Bill Blair, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-bill-blair-resigns-high-commissioner-uk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-bill-blair-resigns-high-commissioner-uk\/\">resigned<\/a> to become Canada\u2019s next high commissioner to the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ontario-ndp-doly-begum-resigns-federal-liberal-by-election-bill-blair\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario NDP deputy leader resigns to run in by-election for Bill Blair\u2019s former riding<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Erskine-Smith said Wednesday he will stay on as a member of Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s caucus until the provincial race is called, citing crucial votes for the minority government as the reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAs soon as Doug Ford calls the by-election, I am all in. I\u2019ll be resigning a seat here,\u201d he told reporters in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIn the meantime, look [at] what\u2019s at stake here in Ottawa. Every vote counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Once the Speaker has received the official warrant that the provincial seat is vacant, Mr. Ford has six months to call the by-election, and the vote could be held in March at the earliest and September by the latest, according to Elections Ontario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Ford said Wednesday he hasn\u2019t decided on timing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI really like Doly, actually, I think she\u2019ll do a good job as a federal MP if she\u2019s fortunate enough to win. And I guess there will be a time to call a by-election after that, I\u2019m just not too sure when,\u201d Mr. Ford told Global News after an event in Mississauga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-premier-doug-ford-ontario-speech-progressive-conservatives-convention\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Doug Ford says he\u2019ll seek fourth term as he touts response to Trump at PC convention<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Asked about the prospect of taking on Mr. Erskine-Smith in the riding, Mr. Ford said, \u201cI\u2019ll just work as hard as we can. And hopefully we can turn that seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Begum on Wednesday also clarified some of her recent comments criticizing Mr. Carney\u2019s policy on the Middle East, which were denounced by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Speaking in the Ontario legislature in November, she said the federal government must find its \u201cmoral backbone\u201d and stop sending arms to Israel and \u201cenabling this genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/TM77YER6Z5EYXI2O3S5A7IKLQY.JPG?auth=a9fb9a6e516d33e7d5a5dafbde19a59d5c05b3895ae20245cd8c9c8860a3f910&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Doly Begum was first elected as a provincial New Democrat in 2018.Cole Burston\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In a statement to The Globe and Mail sent by the federal Liberal Party, Ms. Begum said that like many Canadians, she has been horrified by the catastrophe in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/gaza\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/gaza\/\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAt times, I have felt that governments in Canada and others throughout the world did not move quickly enough to react and I have spoken directly about that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAt the same time, I have seen Mark Carney\u2019s new Liberal government strengthen Canada\u2019s engagement in the region and come forward with meaningful humanitarian aid while advocating for a just and lasting peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Begum, a health care and community advocate, first won her Scarborough seat in 2018. The Progressive Conservatives have repeatedly finished second there during their eight years in power, followed by the Liberals in third \u2013 although the Liberals previously held the seat when they were in government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While Mr. Erskine-Smith, who currently represents the neighbouring federal riding of Beaches-East York, says he intends to run provincially, it is still unclear whether the Ontario Liberals will hold an open nomination race or appoint their candidate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cNo decision has been made to date on if there will be an open nomination or an appointment for the SSW [Scarborough Southwest] candidate.
