{"id":455166,"date":"2026-02-05T09:20:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T09:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/455166\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T09:20:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T09:20:20","slug":"four-out-of-every-10-cancer-cases-are-preventable-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/455166\/","title":{"rendered":"Four out of every 10 cancer cases are preventable: WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\tRead:   2 min<\/p>\n<p>Nearly four out of every 10 cancer cases could be prevented if people avoided a range of risk factors including smoking, drinking, air pollution and certain infections, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>New research published on the eve of World Cancer Day estimated that 38 per cent of all new cancer cases globally in 2022 \u2014 7.1 million \u2014 were linked to preventable causes.<\/p>\n<p>The large team of researchers, which included the WHO\u2019s International Agency for Research on Cancer, looked at 30 factors that increase the risk of getting cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Tobacco was the leading offender, responsible for 15 per cent of all new cancer cases, followed by cancer-causing infections with 10 per cent and <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianaffairs.news\/2025\/01\/04\/alcohol-should-have-cancer-warning-label-us-surgeon-general\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drinking alcohol<\/a> with three per cent, according to the study published in the journal Nature Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Other risk factors included being overweight, a lack of exercise, UV radiation and being exposed to threats such as asbestos while working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first global analysis to show how much cancer risk comes from causes we can prevent,\u201d senior study author Andre Ilbawi, the WHO\u2019s team lead for cancer control, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Almost half of all the preventable cases were lung, stomach or cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Lung cancer was linked to smoking and air pollution, while stomach cancer was largely linked to a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori.<\/p>\n<p>Cervical cancer cases were overwhelmingly caused by human papillomavirus [HPV], which vaccines are effective against.<\/p>\n<p>Men were far more likely to get preventable cancer, with 45 per cent of new cases compared to 30 per cent for women.<\/p>\n<p>And nearly a quarter of all preventable cancer cases among men were from smoking, compared to 11 per cent for women.<\/p>\n<p>To address the problem, the researchers called for countries to adopt strong tobacco control measures and alcohol regulation, and to vaccinate against common infections such as HPV, improve air quality and ensure safer workplaces, healthy diets and exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want to reduce the cancer burden we also need to reduce the noncommunicable disease [NCD] burden \u2014 it is indisputable that tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed food and air quality are major drivers of multiple kinds of cancer,\u201d said Katie Dain, CEO of the NCD Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRelated Posts<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Read: 2 min Nearly four out of every 10 cancer cases could be prevented if people avoided a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":455167,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[56713,49,48,84],"class_list":["post-455166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-afp","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/455166","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=455166"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/455166\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/455167"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=455166"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=455166"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=455166"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
