It makes sense: Since they already know how to speak, the sound of a word might serve as a clue to its meaning.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out there\u2019s a surprising and deep connection between what\u2019s going on in your mouth and how your brain handles reading, and a University of Alberta research team hopes to use it to help people with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new study with the alliterative title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0093934X25001415#:~:text=Results,did%20not%20impact%20behavioural%20performance.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perturbing the pathway: The impact of lollipops and lidocaine on supramarginal gyrus activity during silent reading tasks<\/a>, the team found that numbing the mouth can help people read faster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They carried out the study on just 30 adults and there\u2019s a lot more work to be done, but it points to a mouth-brain connection that may hold the key for future treatments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research is definitely bridging a gap between a couple areas of research that are often overlooking one another even though they are so tightly coupled,\u201d says first author <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/mgholmes?_gl=1*141pb9u*_gcl_au*NDE4NTgxNjI3LjE3NjIyMDQ4NTU.*_ga*MTMxMDU3MTAwMi4xNzE1MjAwNzQz*_ga_21TWH2P5G7*czE3NjYxNjgxNzYkbzMzNyRnMSR0MTc2NjE2ODE4NyRqNDkkbDAkaDE3MDQ0MDk1NQ..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitchell Holmes<\/a>, a PhD candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/rehabilitation\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine<\/a>. \u201cIt will help inform the importance of considering speech mechanisms in helping people learn how to read, especially people who struggle with reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Study participants \u2014 all proficient readers \u2014 were asked to carry out two separate reading tasks while their brains were monitored for activity in the neighbouring regions that handle reading and speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to see how disruptions to the sensory areas in the mouth while reading could affect performance,\u201d Holmes explains. \u201cWe know already that when you\u2019re reading a new word, your mouth sends information to the sensory parts of your brain. If it detects incongruencies with how that word should sound or feel, it will send a corrective command to the motor parts of your brain to tell it how to correct it and say it better on your next attempt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the first task, participants were shown a string of letters and asked whether they spelled a real word or not \u2014 pressing green for yes and red for no. The second task asked whether a string of letters sounded like a real word. So \u201cbloo,\u201d for example, would be a yes, even though that isn\u2019t how \u201cblue\u201d is really spelled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each participant went through the tasks three times under different conditions, first with nothing in their mouth, then with a large lollipop on their tongue and finally, after a swish of lidocaine to numb their mouth. The researchers looked at accuracy and reaction time to assess reading performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Results showed that the lidocaine helped some of the participants read faster, but still accurately. It also reduced activity in the sensory part of the brain, while the lollipop increased activity there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaken together, these preliminary and modest effects suggest that oral somatosensory input influences reading-related brain activity and inter-regional connectivity,\u201d says Holmes. \u201cIt\u2019s a subtle effect, so we don\u2019t know how these effects generalize to other reading tasks or populations. That\u2019s something we want to explore more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next step for Holmes\u2019 research will be to carry out similar, more detailed studies on people who have dyslexia, which affects between five and 10 per cent of the population, <a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiacanada.org\/about-dyslexia\/dyslexia-basics\/what-is-dyslexia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Dyslexia Canada<\/a>. The results may mean that speech-language pathologists could play a greater role in helping people with reading difficulties, Holmes says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of somatosensory feedback in reading definitely warrants more targeted exploration to better our understanding of the relationship between speech-motor processes and reading ability,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The research was funded in part by a <a href=\"https:\/\/nserc-crsng.canada.ca\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada<\/a> research grant to Holmes\u2019 PhD supervisor, <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/jcummine?_gl=1*1ayfkk7*_gcl_au*NDE4NTgxNjI3LjE3NjIyMDQ4NTU.*_ga*MTMxMDU3MTAwMi4xNzE1MjAwNzQz*_ga_21TWH2P5G7*czE3NjQxODEwMDAkbzI5MiRnMSR0MTc2NDE4MTAxMiRqNDgkbDAkaDI4NTk2MjkyOA..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacqueline Cummine<\/a>.
