And Wall Street is panicked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88twfn0006356pdcn5ppvn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Claude Cowork is meant to be like an AI colleague, with the ability to read files, organize folders and draft documents on your behalf. New <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.com\/plugins-for\/cowork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plugins<\/a> tailored for specific industries like sales, finance, data marketing and legal <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/claudeai\/status\/2017299751050612835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">launched<\/a> on Friday. That sent software stocks into a spiral, raising fears that the bread-and-butter software-as-a-service business model that\u2019s driven the tech and digital services industries is now at risk of disruption.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8917jg00003b6pe4k22uaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wall Street is nervous that AI tools like Claude\u2019s new plugins will challenge existing software companies\u2019 data analytics and research products. Companies that use AI to automate and build their own tools might need fewer subscriptions to external research and data services, directly hurting software companies\u2019 bottom lines.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8aluds00063b6p0zwu84ec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The jury is still out on whether AI tools can ultimately decimate the software industry. But investors were spooked Tuesday, selling off shares in legal and financial software and services companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000c356ph4i2jkae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhy do I need to pay for software, the thinking goes, if internal development of these systems now takes developers less time with AI?\u201d Thomas Shipp, head of equity research at LPL Financial, wrote in a note last week. \u201cFurthermore, with the release of offerings like Anthropic\u2019s Claude Cowork, an application with access to read and edit files, (fewer) technical users are now empowered to replace existing workflows.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000d356p2aljdcm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An exchange-traded fund tracking the software industry slumped 5.69% on Tuesday and had its worst day since April. It was down 1% on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000e356pc2gb9c3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thomson Reuters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/TRI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TRI<\/a>) plunged 15.83% Tuesday, its biggest single-day drop on record; and Legalzoom.com (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/LZ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LZ<\/a>) sank 19.68%. Those stocks rebounded slightly Wednesday, each rising more than 1% as investors stepped in to buy the dip. European companies felt the pain too: London-based RELX, which owns data analytics company LexisNexis, fell 14% Tuesday and was down 1.5% Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000f356ptsk7tvd2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile still early and preliminary with the product, this adds to investors\u2019 fear that AI-native companies will be able to break into the legal tech space and compete with larger players like (Thomson Reuters) and RELX,\u201d Toni Kaplan, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley, said in a note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000g356pq7xhm11a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sell-off spread Tuesday, as Wall Street reckoned with the potential for AI to eat into other companies\u2019 business models. FactSet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/FDS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FDS<\/a>) fell 10.51%. Meanwhile, financial firms with funds invested in software companies sold off as well. Blue Owl (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/OWL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OWL<\/a>) shares fell 9.76% on Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000h356pwrh7ze5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sliding stocks will likely only amplify concerns over AI-related job losses. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned AI will cause \u201cunusually painful\u201d disruption to jobs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darioamodei.com\/essay\/the-adolescence-of-technology#4-player-piano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arguing<\/a> \u201cAI could displace half of all entry-level white-collar jobs in the next 1\u20135 years.\u201d However, other tech and business leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/tech\/ai-replace-human-workers-tech-insiders-split\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have painted a less extreme picture<\/a> of how AI could impact jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000i356phirhtqs7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/salesforce-ceo-marc-benioff-why-154430631.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told Fortune <\/a>last year that the company won\u2019t be hiring any additional software engineers, customer service agents, or lawyers because of AI tools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000j356pp9cvteqe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some believe the software sell-off triggered by Anthropic\u2019s new tool is overblown. Last year when Chinese company DeepSeek released cheap and efficient AI models, chipmaker Nvidia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/27\/tech\/deepseek-stocks-ai-china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost<\/a> nearly $600 billion in market value.  A year later, DeepSeek is not causing the widespread disruption that was feared. Nvidia briefly became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/29\/tech\/nvidia-5-trillion-valuation-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the world\u2019s first $5 trillion company<\/a> in October.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000k356p0c8icxs9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nick Dempsey, director of media equity research at Barclays, wrote in a note that he doubts that general AI models will be a viable substitute for industry-specific expertise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml88u5g2000l356p4ckh5fv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Analysts at Aurelion Research <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelionresearch.substack.com\/p\/anthropic-and-the-saas-sell-off-structural\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> they viewed the sell-off as \u201csentiment driven\u201d based off \u201cAI uncertainty.\u201d That sentiment will likely \u201cnormalize\u201d as companies see more measurable returns from AI, they said.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Anthropic just launched a new AI tool that could replace dozens of software tools.
