Melania, the documentary about the United States\u2019 First Lady Melania Trump, may have had its opening box office weekend boosted by bulk buying, according to reports.<\/p>\n
The Amazon<\/a>-produced film, chronicling the life of Trump leading up to her husband Donald\u2019s<\/a> second inauguration as President in 2024, made $7million (\u00a35.1million) in its opening weekend.<\/p>\n While that is a strong debut for a documentary, the film had a significantly larger release than most films in this genre, and reports of empty cinema screenings in the UK and US emerged online. The film currently stands at a five per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, with one Guardian<\/a> critic giving the film zero stars out of five.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Examining the film\u2019s opening weekend, The Daily Beast<\/a> reports that there have been accusations of \u201cfake tickets sales\u201d made to boost the movie\u2019s fortunes.<\/p>\n The article cites box office expert Tom Brueggemann, whose claims via his Substack<\/a>: \u201cIndustry sources say there were signs that blocs of tickets were purchased for the weekend, then distributed to senior citizen homes, Republican activitists, other interested parties for free to help boost audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n Puck<\/a> reporter Matthew Belloni, investigating the claims, wrote that distributor Amazon and cinema chains AMC and Regal told him that they \u201cdid not experience unusual block purchases of tickets\u201d for the film.<\/p>\n Belloni added the caveat that \u201cthe theatre chains might not necessarily know, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n Brueggemann also conceded that \u201cthe documentation on this is sketchy\u201d, and that it\u2019s unclear how much of an effect bulk buying had on the total given that it would be \u201clogical\u201d for a film with this target audience to make the total it achieved legitimately.<\/p>\n In other news, reports emerged about the demographics who are driving the movie\u2019s success<\/a>, with \u201colder white women\u201d said to be the largest group flocking to see the film.
