Canadian pop star Tate McRae<\/a>, 22, is facing backlash over her appearance in an ad promoting Team USA ahead of the upcoming Winter Olympics<\/a> in Italy.<\/p>\n

In the ad, the Calgary-born singer is seen asking an owl for directions to Italy, then mentions only Team USA athletes before throwing in a line about the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

Following its release, commentators questioned why she would appear in content supporting American athletes over her native country.<\/p>\n

The Nobody\u2019s Girl singer responded to critics in an Instagram post, sharing a photo of herself as a small child waving a Canadian flag with the caption, \u201cy\u2019all know I\u2019m Canada down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat in the treason is this Tate?\u201d a person said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe absolute ick every Canadian just felt. In 2026\u2026 what were you and your team thinking?\u201d one user commented.<\/p>\n

\u201cArguably the most Alberta move imaginable,\u201d another response reads.<\/p>\n

Others were less critical of the ad, noting that McRae had spent some time living in the U.S. Some pointed out her age.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s remember that this young woman is only 22 years old. She\u2019s been living in California for the past five years, and it\u2019s natural for her to make mistakes,\u201d a comment reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood for her! y\u2019all weird for getting your feelings hurt over something like this. she literally lives in america [sic], stop being haters,\u201d one person said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove this!! Get that bag girl\u2026. Who cares how you get a payday!! Love it,\u201d another comment says.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, McRae\u2019s home province of Alberta has seen growing calls from separatists<\/a> to secede from Canada and join the U.S.<\/p>\n

Last month, one of the leaders of the Alberta separatist movement, Jeffrey Rath, said on social media that he looks forward to \u201cmeeting with US Treasury officials next month to discuss our feasibility study regarding a 500 billion USD line of credit to support the transition to a free and independent Alberta.\u201d<\/p>\n

In January, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also appeared to throw his support behind the Alberta separatist movement when he said the province\u2019s vast oil reserves make it \u201ca natural partner for the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> has made no secret of his desire for Canada to become the 51st state<\/a>, which he has mentioned repeatedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlbertans are very independent people,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cPeople are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the U.S. has got.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said last week that he expects the U.S. administration to \u201crespect Canadian sovereignty,\u201d adding that he was \u201calways clear with President Trump to that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith echoed Carney\u2019s sentiments, saying she expected U.S. leaders to leave discussions about Alberta\u2019s \u201cdemocratic process\u201d to Albertans and Canadians.<\/p>\n

McRae grew up as a dancer in Calgary before breaking out as a pop star with the viral success of her song One Day, which has more than 40 million views on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her 2020 hit\u00a0You Broke Me First\u00a0established her as a prominent musician and performer.<\/p>\n
