{"id":457684,"date":"2026-02-06T13:53:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T13:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/457684\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T13:53:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T13:53:10","slug":"esa-reveals-first-images-from-the-groundbreaking-meteosat-third-generation-sounder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/457684\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA reveals first images from the groundbreaking Meteosat Third Generation Sounder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First images are live from the European Space Agency\u2019s (ESA) Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder satellite\u2019s sounder, which aims to bring Earth observations into a new era with at least one new data type to improve weather forecasts of severe storms.<\/p>\n<p>The mission, also known as MTG-S, includes an infrared sounder to take hyperspectral soundings of the atmosphere. The agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Meteorological_missions\/meteosat_third_generation\/Europe_s_next-generation_weather_satellite_sends_back_first_images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stated<\/a> that it is \u201cthe first European hyperspectral sounding instrument in geostationary orbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sounder\u2019s data product, said to be \u201ccompletely new,\u201d will analyze the patterns in light waves as an interferometer to measure temperature, humidity, wind and trace gases. In future the agency plans to produce 3D maps of the atmosphere with this data to assist with forecasting, particular for fast-moving storms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect data from this mission to change the way we forecast severe storms over Europe \u2013 and this is very exciting for communities and citizens, as well as for meteorologists and climatologists,\u201d said Simonetta Cheli, ESA\u2019s director of EO (Earth Observation) programs, in the same statement.<\/p>\n<p>MTG-S also has an ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission, which delivered its first images last year.<\/p>\n<p>MTG-S was launched July 1, 2025. It follows on from an imager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thalesaleniaspace.com\/en\/press-releases\/mtg-s1-first-atmospheric-sounding-satellite-meteosat-third-generation-program\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.thalesaleniaspace.com\/en\/press-releases\/mtg-s1-first-atmospheric-sounding-satellite-meteosat-third-generation-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">MTG-I<\/a>, which launched in December 2022; a second imager is expected to launch sometime in 2026. MTG-S is a collaboration between several entities. Thales Alenia Space is the prime contractor for the overall MTG mission, and OHB Systems is responsible for MTG-S. Eumetsat manages mission control and data distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits for Canada<\/p>\n<p>Canada is an associate member of ESA and recently contributed \u20ac407.7\u00a0million (~ CAD $664.6 million) to ESA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Newsroom\/Press_Releases\/ESA_Member_States_commit_to_largest_contributions_at_Ministerial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">record budget of \u20ac22.3 billion<\/a>\u00a0(~CAD $36 billion) for the next three years, with the first year of the cycle being \u20ac8.26 billion (~CAD $13.34 billion).<\/p>\n<p>In recent <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceq.ca\/european-space-agency-dg-aschbacher-highlights-2026-milestones-in-annual-address\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remarks about the budget<\/a> delivered last month, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher said Canada\u2019s increase in funding (<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceq.ca\/canadian-government-pivots-to-europe-with-528-5-million-investment-for-dual-use-technologies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced in November<\/a> at the Space Canada SpaceBound conference) is \u201cfour times as much\u201d and a \u201cvery significant commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CSA will receive more access to ESA programs as a result of the commitment, which could mean more access as well to MTG. While Canada does have its own EO satellites, most especially the RADARSAT 2 and RADARSAT Constellation Mission synthetic aperture radar, MTG\u2019s capabilities allow for different wavelength observations to complement or enhance possible collaborations with RADARSAT.<\/p>\n<p>The first images<\/p>\n<p>The images showed Earth\u2019s full disc from orbit at geostationary altitude, roughly 36,000 km above our planet, as taken on Nov. 15, 2025. Some of the highlights include:<\/p>\n<p>A \u201ctemperature\u201d image that scrutinized the surface in the infrared, showing the warmest (dark red) areas in parts of Africa and South America.
