Morrissey<\/a> has dropped a new single, \u2018Notre-Dame\u2019, which notably omits a controversial lyric relating to terrorism that he sang live.<\/p>\n

The mid-paced indie-rock track, dominated by a wobbling synth line, was inspired by the tragic fire of the historical Parisian cathedral on April 15, 2019. \u201cNotre-Dame, we know who tried to kill you,\u201d Morrissey sings. \u201cNotre-Dame, we will not be silent.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was closed for five years and had to be renovated at a cost of over $700 million afterwards. A huge investigation into the cause of the fire found no identifiable reason why the fire started<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paris\u2019 chief prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in April 2024: \u201cEvery avenue, including the hypothesis of a human role in the origin of this fire (has been) explored since the beginning of the investigation. But the truth is that the closer we have got to the spot the fire started, and the more results of analyses come back, the more weight is lent to the theory of an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former frontman of The Smiths<\/a> had been performing the song live as far back as 2023, in which he sang: \u201cBefore investigations\/They said, \u2018It\u2019s not terrorism\u2019.\u201d\u00a0In the studio version of the song, that line has been altered to a repeat of the earlier line \u201cBefore investigations\/They said, \u2018There\u2019s nothing to see here.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Notre-Dame\u2019 is the second single to be taken from Morrissey\u2019s forthcoming album \u2018Make-Up Is A Lie\u2019<\/a>, which will be his first album for six years. Upon announcing it last month, he also unveiled its title track.<\/p>\n

The album drops on March 6 via Sire Records<\/a>, who Morrissey signed with after he declared he had \u201cvoluntarily withdrawn from any association with Capitol Records\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is separate from his long-delayed album\u00a0\u2018Bonfire Of Teenagers\u2019. <\/a>Controversy around the album continued the following year, when Morrissey alleged on\u00a0his website<\/a>\u00a0that he was\u00a0\u201cquickly coming around to\u201d the belief that [Capitol Records] only signed \u2018Bonfire Of Teenagers\u2019 \u201cin order to sabotage it\u201d<\/a>. He doubled down on this stance later too, alleging\u00a0that the CEO of Capitol was trying to derail his career<\/a>, and then claiming that he was\u00a0being \u201cgagged\u201d over its release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Miley Cyrus<\/a>\u00a0was set to feature on the long-delayed album, providing vocals to a song called\u00a0\u2018I Am Veronica\u2019<\/a>. She recorded the song with Morrissey in 2020, but later\u00a0asked to have her backing vocals removed<\/a>. It appears that the decision was made in relation to his political stance, and\u00a0his support for the controversial far-right party For Britain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Morrissey has\u00a0insisted that he is not far right<\/a>, and former bandmate and guitarist\u00a0Johnny Marr<\/a>\u00a0previously spoke out about the topic too, saying that he thinks it has\u00a0\u201ccast a shadow over The Smiths\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Morrissey later shared that he\u00a0had bought back the rights to \u2018Bonfire Of Teenagers\u2019<\/a>, but it remains unclear if it will be released anytime soon.<\/p>\n

Morrissey will be playing European shows this month, beginning in Denmark on February 13. The tour also includes a\u00a0headline date at The O2<\/a>, which is his only scheduled UK gig of the year. However, the singer has cancelled five shows so far this year,<\/a> most recently in Florida. This, alongside\u00a0performances in San Diego, St. Louis and\u00a0Atlanta \u2013 were said to be due to \u201cartist illness\u201d<\/a>.
